People should ask themselves who else was a bachelor at 30 going to date in a small Alabama city in that day? All the women his age in a place like that had long been married and had a family by that time. This wasn’t NYC, or even Atlanta. If he was going to date he had to date younger women who weren’t already married. I think it’s telling that his wife is also a woman 14 years younger. That’s what was available to date in that place in that day.
Even bachelors with their pick of the crop opted often for younger women/ Elvis Presley comes to mind. I think there was a significant age gap between him and Priscilla and she was very young when they married.
