Several long-shot options under consideration in wake of Moore allegations.
Republican leaders are exploring a dramatic remedy to salvage the Alabama Senate seat as fresh polling shows Roy Moores prospects fading fast.
With less than four weeks until the special election and no sign that the partys besieged nominee will exit the race, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and his top advisers are discussing the legal feasibility of asking appointed Sen. Luther Strange to resign from his seat in order to trigger a new special election.
McConnell aides express caution, saying theyre uncertain whether such a move, one of several options being discussed, is even possible. Yet the talks underscore the despair among top Republicans over relinquishing a seat in deep-red Alabama, further diminishing their slim Senate majority.

Democrats want the seat because it gets them closer to impeaching Trump. Yertle wants the seat to maintain his powerbase. Neither are representing the people of Alabama who are the deciders in this matter.
And Moore said that he will not vote for McConnell as majority leader which is why all of this is happening in the first place in my opinion.
The governor sets the date for special elections per Alabama law.
Well then its settled. The left (and the swampy GOP) can hope all they want....... won’t help.

I agree this is about republicans desperately trying to give up the majority in the senate. They know without Moore the democrat will win the seat and that's one step closer to a democrat 51 seat majority that the republicans want.
The republicans know if they can just lose the senate majority by the midterms they will permanently derail President Trump. Then all the have to do is wait two more years and they figure he will not be able to win reelection.
The republican party is a disgrace to this nation. In many ways they are worse than the democrats who they are secretly in complete alliance.
There guy didnt win so they want another election!
From the Democratic Party play book ?
“And Moore said that he will not vote for McConnell as majority leader which is why all of this is happening in the first place in my opinion.”
I agree with you.
Pretty much. Looks like she doesn't want to play along with McConnell & Co. Neither does Sessions. Mitch is down to hoping the Democrat wins otherwise he has to live with Moore for the next two years.
McConnell is a POS. This is worse than Russia meddling in our elections!
If the MSM and DEEP STATE succeeds in this election, every Conservative candidate leading in the polls will find himself/herself bombarded with slander and innuendo. We are in a war for the SOUL of AMERICA.
“Screw them. I just donated $50 to Roy Moore.”
Good for you. I will be sending Moore another donation next week. Folks, we have to fight back.
It's their own poll and it would have Roy Moore trailing even if he was the only one in the race.
Hi. How are you?
Yep. A very strong NO.
She has a spine of steel!
So, it’s either Moore or the RAT.
I stand with Moore.
That won’t happen as the “accusations” get thinner and thinner. Tomorrow’s Christian women’s rally for Moore will put an end to this foolishness.
“McConnell is a POS. This is worse than Russia meddling in our elections!”
Good analysis.
Great! Really upset about this smear against Judge Moore. Did you see Senator Menendez who was on trial for criminal corruption just received word that the proceeding was declared a mistrial. This is how the left gets their criminal Senators off. The Senate should ask for his resignation!
Im glad to see the ill-conceived 17th Amendment actually backfiring in the faces of anti-constitutional republic progressives.
Can the gov just say there wont be new elections? Is that in his purview?
Amendment 17
It looks like it would be possible for the temporary senator (Strange) to resign, triggering the governors appointment of a new senator and possibly, gratuitously, allowing the governor to call a new election. But it would be on the governor to justify to the public why the new cycle of primary and general election were needed. It would patently be an excuse, not a reason.- :
- The Senate of the United States shall be composed of two Senators from each State, elected by the people thereof, for six years; and each Senator shall have one vote. The electors in each State shall have the qualifications requisite for electors of the most numerous branch of the State legislatures.
When vacancies happen in the representation of any State in the Senate, the executive authority of such State shall issue writs of election to fill such vacancies: Provided, That the legislature of any State may empower the executive thereof to make temporary appointments until the people fill the vacancies by election as the legislature may direct.
This amendment shall not be so construed as to affect the election or term of any Senator chosen before it becomes valid as part of the Constitution.
A responsible governor would decline to participate in such a charade, and if indeed Alabamas governor has rejected such a ploy, it reflects credit on her, IMHO.
