People in England and Wales have two weeks to hand in guns, other weapons and ammunition to police stations without being punished for possession.
People who surrender firearms will not automatically be charged, but will be if they are later connected to a crime.
Police say many firearms are held in ignorance of their illegality.
The parents of 18-year-old Yusuf Sonko, who was shot dead in Liverpool on 2 June, have called on people to hand in any firearms.
Papa and Kajdijah Sonko spoke to BBC Breakfast about finding out that their son had been killed.
Mr Sonko said he was "a bright boy who had finished his last exam to go to university", and was "in the wrong place at the wrong time".
Kajdijah Sonko pleaded with anyone who owns a gun to give it into police.

just another part of the British Ruling Elite’s Treasonous SELLOUT of the nation to their Islamonazi invasion forces.
(Dear Police, do you DARE try to even ASK the Islamics to give you their firearms, knives, and bombs?) Rhetorical question, the answer is clearly NO! You’d probably be fired or incarcerated if you did).
Comment: it is a crying shame how the many good British people have been sold out by their rulers
Maybe not, but later, they might be killed by their government. Isn't this what eventually happens when the people are disarmed?
I bet they get some world class antiques.
Some of those English double rifles and shotguns are worth six figures.
WOW, so you have a gun and if you turn it in, you MIGHT not be charged, unless it turns out to have been involved in a crime?
If you didn’t buy that thing brand new, how could you be certain?
And even if you did buy it new, that’s a lot of trust to put in a prosecutors skill to not misidentify YOURS as the weapon in that unsolved murder.
Especially when the Thames and it’s bridges are available every evening.
“Some of those English double rifles and shotguns are worth six figures.”
In a world where conex boxes are filled with Chinese workers and shipped around the world, one would look for a way to smuggle out that rare double to a place of freedom in Africa, America, or maybe to a Russian or Chinese collector.
Britain needs a 2nd amendment!
Thank God almighty we have one.
The government should fear the citizenry, not the other way around!
But the streets of London will be so much safer if they're turned in and destroyed. Gangbangers salivate at the chance to misuse a .470 Nitro Express, after all.
I met a couple Britts in Alaska several years ago. Everybody was on vacation. After we made friends, the 1st thing they wanted was to shoot my guns. They were like a couple of kids in a candy store.
At the Australian Shot Show in Brisbane, this year, I looked at a current production triple barrel side by side 20 gauge, hand made in England.
It was beautiful, and gave the shooter one more shot than the traditional double barrel.
Cost - $100,000 Australian.
“Not automatically be charged”. Now there’s a rock solid promise you can take to the bank. Can those people be that stupid? /rhetorical question.
Good thing its a rhetorical question, of I would answer it. 🤠😆🤯😆
Wow! ( Elmer Fudd would love it!)
Shelter in place !
The UK gov’t with its unarmed police will surely be in time to save you from the moslem throat cutters.
(However pathetic Canada becomes wrt private weapons ownership and self defence, we are well behind my country of birth, the UK)
Get ready England, you are about to become Chicago
“The government should fear the citizenry, not the other way around!”
Free men think that way. Unfortunately our British brethren have grown quite comfortable in their role as subjects. This is just one part of the result of the modern welfare state.
I’m thinking a nice Lee Enfield .303. Ten round magazine.
As if the muzzies are going to turn in any of THEIR weapons.
I can’t believe America is allied with these fools.
