Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett (D) signed legislation Monday that requires a $15-an-hour minimum wage starting in 2021 for businesses with at least 51 employees, and giving smaller businesses a bit more time to implement that wage.
The wealthy county is the first jurisdiction in Maryland, and the second in the region behind the District, to adopt a $15 minimum, which has become a central focus of the progressive movement in recent years. Leaders of the business community oppose the law and say it will put Marylands largest jurisdiction at a disadvantage compared to its suburban neighbors.
Advocates are vowing to use the legislations passage to renew their push for a statewide $15 minimum, noting that Montgomery is the only suburban U.S. jurisdiction to mandate the wage in a state that has not enacted a similar law statewide.

Erwin Rommel would find the upcoming Food Desert, quite impressive.
I lived there in a former life, do not miss it any.
LOL. C'mon, the best food is in Langley Park ;)
I already do all my shopping in Virginia.(lower tax and no bag tax!!)
Agreed on the bag tax. Haven't shopped in Monkey County since they implemented that stupid bag tax. Personally go to Howard County (far closer).
But sales tax cheaper in VA? Pretty much every place in NOVA the sales tax is 6%, just like MD. You've got to go pretty far south to get a lower (5.3%) tax rate.
and union wages..
many of those are tied to the min-wage.
I understand totally.
Grew up in a cornfields in Illinois and Indiana.
Moved here 30 years ago. I still can’t accept the selfishness and stupidity here. Moving out as soon as I can. Understand why you don’t miss it.
But where did you go? Thought I go to VA but they have turned! NOVA is part of the swamp and rules the state.
many of them were not allowed to run one due to health codes and other government BS.
You may be right. Time will tell. By 2019, we could be seeing the affects of it with closing stores and layoffs.
Got this info from a detective on the M.C. sexual assault squad. It's not a joke.
But sales tax cheaper in VA?
I depends what you are buying! And I've got friends in the far south
Lighten up. Life is short. I like your posts. Almost always agree with you. Don't think its fair if the first time I do you call me out on the carpet.
I respect you. Can we keep it that way? Your call.
Alright, an upfront warning of future deteriorating economy of Maryland ... start closing up and moving out.
So you believe the government should dictate wages?
The purpose of the minimum wage is to price small businesses out of the market to the big-government/big-corporate/big-union criminal complex can have a monopoly.
And also to give raises to union workers on contracts that specify a certain wage above minimum wage.
If you read something from me that seems far too serious, chances are, I'm being extremely facetious. (Thus my comment on Langley Park)
Seriously, though, on taxes, I was well and truly shocked when I first started working in Nova. I'd always been under the impression that it was so much cheaper than in MD (especially when I first started buying lunch in Arlington County...WTF is up with the 4% restaurant tax ON TOP OF the 6% sales tax? -- that's worse than even in the District)
(Note: the disgust is directed toward the county gov't, not toward you or any other FReeper...unless they're on the Arlington County Board of Supervisors)
I am originally from an hour south of Indianapolis, currently live in a small town in WV. Summers are generally mild , winters can be a lot of snow, we are at 3100.
Much slower pace of life, nearest Walmart is 45 min away, there is a local grocery and dollar store nearby. There are many options in the DC area for food and entertainment that are not available here, however the fishing, hunting skiing etc. is much better here.
May God bless you on your journey.
Hell NO!...where did u get that impression???????????
You may be right. Time will tell. By 2019, we could be seeing the affects of it with closing stores and layoffs.
Big biz will automate with robots and small businesses will close. Walmart is already testing restocking robots.
I have no idea what you meant when you said this: “Knowing that....the purpose of any new small business would be to make a fortune with less then 50 employees....” and I thought meant that you thought small businesses made fortunes at the expense of their employees. I obviously misunderstood.
Plus you can get your Sam’s Club coke in a real Styrofoam cup unlike in oh so trendy Montgomery County
And of course, the advocates want it statewide. They can s*** my b***s.
Maryland “Freak State” PING!
