Jerry Jones Forfeiting Cowboys Reportedly Discussed by Owners over Goodell Saga
Bleacher Report ^

Posted on 11/12/2017 8:45:25 PM PST by TigerClaws

NFL owners have reportedly brought up the idea of Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones forfeiting the franchise.

On Sunday, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk cited a league source who said "multiple owners already have been discussing the possibility, which flows from Article VIII of the NFL's Constitution and Bylaws."

One of the sections of the article allows the commissioner to essentially force the forfeiture of a team if the owner "has been or is guilty of conduct detrimental to the welfare of the league or professional football" and a $500,000 fine is deemed "not adequate or sufficient."

Florio granted such a move "would trigger years of litigation" and explained the notion of applying it to Jones specifically "comes from the belief among owners that Jones instigated Papa John's CEO John Schnatter to disparage the NFL, blaming league leadership for ratings declines and, in turn, a reduction in Papa John's revenues."

The news comes after a period of time when Jones' name and the Cowboys were in plenty of NFL headlines.

His team's star running back, Ezekiel Elliott, started his six-game suspension stemming from a domestic violence investigation Sunday during Dallas' 27-7 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. The ongoing case has been litigated throughout the NFL season and will continue to be moving forward.

Jones also weighed in on the notion of players protesting police brutality and racial inequality by kneeling during the national anthem, saying anyone who "disrespects the flag" will not be allowed to play, per Mike Finger of the San Antonio Express-News.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported the comments triggered a team meeting.

According to Jeff Darlington of ESPN, Jones didn't even speak with Falcons owner Arthur Blank before Sunday's contest. Clarence E. Hill Jr. and Drew Davison of the Star-Telegram noted Blank—who SportsDay said is the compensation committee chairman for owners who will decide on Roger Goodell's potential contract extension—and Jones "are at odds" regarding the extension.

Hill and Davison said "Jones threatened to sue the league" and "contends that Blank has misled owners about having the unanimous approval of the six-man committee to extend Goodell."

Except they cannot have no right to deprive property without due process of law because that is unconstitutional.

Jerry Jones has picked up the mantle that Al Davis left in his death. If the NFL couldn’t control Al, they won’t be able to control Jerry.

I do get it as you say.

The NFL, players and owners, have bitten the hand that fed them; now the NFL must pay the price for that indiscretion.

The NFL and its' players sowed bitter seed and the harvest is equally bitter

It could happen. Jones made a mistake when he kneeled with the players.

But, IIRC, that kneeling was NOT during the anthem. More like a statement that "we are all one team, agree or not". YMMV.

Then we could be just like all the other countries in the UN.

That would seem to be a reason to reject soccer...U.S. OUT OF U.N., U.N. OUT OF U.S., NOW!

White guys on the offensive line and tight end.

I would have loved to see Shaq O'Neil and LeBron James at tight end. They'd have been fun to watch!

Doesn’t matter. Giving anti-American scum any type of support disgusts me. Jones can burn.

I think the older children of late owner Carroll Rosenbloom sued Georgia Frontiere, but she didn't have to give up the franchise. She later sold partial ownership of the Rams to Stan Kroenke when she moved the team to St. Louis. After her death, Kroenke had the right to purchase the remaining share of the team. He did and moved back to LA.

There are few people hated in St. Louis more than Stan Kroenke.

"the Left" didn't get the NFL - the NFL is dying from its own greed and false patriotism. Professional football, more than any other sport, has worn a mask of huge flags, mawkish displays of patriotic emblems, using uniformed troops as decorations - but at the heart of it, it's a kid's game turned into a money-making extravaganza, not anything even vaguely involved with supporting our country.

All the Colon Kaeperniks of the world did was lift the veil and expose the rotten, false core of the NFL for all to see.

You just stated the same thing as you did in your first post. That applies only to the government. The NFL can do what it wants and how it wants.

The constitutional issue applies only to governments. I repeat only to governments and not to the NFL.

Let's pretend it is the first amendment and the issue is free speech. The first amendment applies only to the government. My employer, FreeRepublic, my home owner's association can all dictate and can sensor all they want. That is why the home owner's association can decide to prevent me from putting up a sign in my window. My employer can sensor my speech as well as FreeRepublic. However, the government can't sensor.

If the NFL states in its bylaws that a majority vote of the owners can strip a team from its owner, then that is good enough. They may just dislike the man and nothing more. The NFL can strip the Cowboys from Jerry Jones and it is a done deal.

“Only applies to Governments”. That is so absurd that I hesitate to embarrass you any more than you are. The NFL has no such provision and if it did it would be subject to due process. You are living in an alternative universe only in your mind. No one is depriving Jerry Jones of his property.

Everything you said in your post is true - and sad for our country because the NFL needs to be flushed until real patriotism returns.

The word is “censor” not “sensor”. Perhaps watching fewer football games and reading more would improve things for you.

They really want to pay Goodell $49MM per year to watch him destroy the league? I thought these guys were smart! I am with Jerry Jones all the way on this one.
