An Alabama candidate for the US Senate is strongly denying allegations that he sexually abused a 14-year-old girl.
Roy Moore, a Republican firebrand, said claims that he preyed on a teenager while he was a 32-year-old prosecutor were "completely false".
Leigh Corfman and three other women say Mr Moore made sexual advances on them when they were between the ages of 14 and 18, the Washington Post reports.
The top Senate Republican said Mr Moore must step aside if the claims are true.
Mr Moore, who is now 70, said in a statement to the Post: "These allegations are completely false and are a desperate political attack by the National Democrat Party and the Washington Post on this campaign."
The Christian conservative's team said in another statement about the allegations, "this garbage is the very definition of fake news and intentional defamation".
"Judge Roy Moore has endured the most outlandish attacks on any candidate in the modern political arena, but this story in today's Washington Post alleging sexual impropriety takes the cake," its statement added.

What I want to know is this—when will the Republicans get serious and start using the same tactics against the Dems? Time and time again we hear about the misconduct on their side, yet, other than Breitbart, no one on the right actually in politics ever seeks out this information to use for their own advantage.
I agree...against her and Wapo.
Nope. If they wanted to do that they would have played that hand months ago in the primaries. This is the dems. It is quite a ploy to go after Moore's core strength. If they can get even a chunk of people to believe the ten commandments zealot was a pedophile they will have a chance.
Meanwhile Doug Jones is running a lot of tear-jerker TV ads trying to look like a reasonable conservative that cares about veterans. The dems down here look like RINOs in many other states in that they go to the right at election time. Disgusting.
We will see how many women they come up with this time.
Liberal Media: "Can you prove they are false!"
Judge Moore: "Prove they are false? How?!? they're from 38 years ago. And that's not how the system works anyway, the onus is on the accuser to provide any evidence she might have that they are true, not mine to prove they are false.
Washington Post Headline for Tomorrow:
"Moore states he can't prove molestation accusations false, says accuser might have evidence."
>> >> Moore needs to file charges.
>> On what grounds?
Libel. Slander. Defamation.
He’s not going to a win a defamation case unless the Post knew that the women in this story are conspiring to lie.
Looks like Roy may have dated young women with the parents approval when he was 30, so they came up with the 14 year old to make the story worse. That way they are claiming it’s 4 women.
He’s a public figure. Unless he can prove that the women conspired to lie and the Post knew about it, he’s not going to win.
Moore's a public figure. He has to prove malice on the part of either the Post or the accusers. Not easy to do.
Immediately file defamation suits.
Agree. Suing is a bad idea. Public figure. Seems desperate.
Just deny and move on.
I read the story the older girls claimed he kissed them on dates sanctioned by their mothers. The claim that he made “sexual advances” is not supported.
Trump threatened charges against the women and they disappeared.
He’s more of a lawyer than any of us, I’m sure he knows how it works.
But the maliciousness should be obvious. A false accusation of criminal conduct is inherently malicious.
“made sexual advances.” So, he didn’t expose himself, or had sex with them, or rape them or anything like that?
Rediculous...
Judge Moore was Chief Justice on the Alabama Supreme Court. There is NFW this is true.
This appears to be a coordinated attack by the media, and uniparty hacks McConnell and even Sen. Shelby.
Thanks Ladies, your checks are in the mail. Love, John McCain and his Democrat friends.
If its really defamation, he should sue.
But a sex abuse charge is virtually impossible to refute...
