Changing magnetic field density, at least on the surface of the Earth, requires the addition of magnetic material.
Look for iron meteors or volcanoes.
Something caused iron and other metals to move around relatively quickly.
As far as not noticing it, perhaps the former residents of Santorini, Crete or Cypress might have a word to say about it.
