Gillespie- 1.1 million votes
Trump- 1.7 million votes
Gillespie did not have the advantage of running against Hillary.
I guess GW Bush help didnt put Ed over the top. Probably cost him votes.
Any move right is a win for President Trump's agenda. While Virginia's voters might not have slid full right they may have settled for a step or two to the right over McAuliffe. From an Art of the Deal perspective, it might still be winning!
I like your optimism, but this election was catastrophic for VA. It's even possible that the Republican majority in the House of Delegates has been lost.
GOP says it’s a backlash against Trump. Perhaps it’s a backlash against the do nothing GOP Congress.
Trump received 700,000 more votes than Ed Gillespie. If Ed had reached out to those voters he would have won. Instead, he stood for nothing and folded like a cheap suit

So the real news story is "Two pro-Hillary blue states remained blue." Let the democrats have their 48 hours of celebration...nobody will even remember this election by the weekend.
Did anyone think the swamp was going to be happy about draining?
I count 50 50 right now for the house of delegates with may be only 2 delegate districts not counted at 100 per cent yet. Some votes are close in numbers and may get challenged by one or other party...might be January before the final count gets settled. The Senate is still in Republican hands until 2019 at least so the Dems won’t exactly be able to steam roller their plans through.
Considering northern Virginia is heavily populated by government workers and all those affiliated with the government (the swamp) which has been leftist run since Bill Clinton, I hardly think the home grown natural Virginians rejected Trump as the article implies. I am related to several Virginians that live throughout the state and they are staunch anti-democrats, they claim most the folks they know are also.
So I do not think they rejected “Trumpism”, but miss their dear old obamaism.
Democrat state, establishment republican.....any reasonable person looking at this race knew what the outcome was going to be!!!
“Except as noted (*), every Virginia Governor election for 36 years has been won by the nominee of the party opposite the President at the time of the election. “
Very interesting. I guess I’ll keep avoiding virgina for the foreseeable future. I’m tired of getting tickets there just because I have Tennessee plates.
True, but remember that Trump was running in a presidential election where Virginia senator Tim Kaine was on the ballot as Hillary Clinton’s running mate.
That was a stretch on my part. I know full well we are battling pure evil and I truly despise the relative ease at which so many citizens seem to be willing to surrender to it. Their deliberate drive down Dependency Road away from Freedomtown is terrifying.
I don’t think that Northam’s win is as important as the shellacking the Republicans took in the Virginia legislature, going from a two-thirds majority to possibly losing control. I don’t think that all of those were a rejection of Trump.
The why's and therefore's.
When the truth is simply, good over evil (or vice versa)
The prize is America.
Two entities want us; Good and evil.
So it all depends on your world view whether a dem or a pubbie is the good guy or the bad guy.
Good vs evil, that's all it is.
Hopefully, the recounts will favor the Rs and the Rs will retain the majority. If not, VA is truly toast.
Did I see where Northam won Norfolk County? Where the navy base is? What's up with that?
