This happened for two reasons. Marshall tried to hide from this candidate which outspent him by an unbelievable amount. We had just Virginia to really make a statement and yet again the whole of the country GOP couldn’t focus. Democrats did and they picked up at least 6 seats in the Virginia House and narrowly kept all three statewide seats. Gillespie is losing by a greater margin than Cuccinelli. The Northham effort to scared minority voters to the polls appears to have worked plus the Democrats had the advantage.

And this is just a taste of what to expect next November. The people like us know how important it is that democrats don't regain control so we'll hold our nose and vote anyway, but we are the minority. The VAST majority of Independent and Republican leaning voters who aren't very political are mad as hell that the party essentially lied to them for six years about repealing Obamacare, and are more than willing to “punish” the party by handing the Congress (and all other seats up and down the ballot) to the democrats.
