They have the body. Use the perp’s fingers.

It doesn’t work on a dead finger.

“I have a hard time believing the FBI can’t break into a suspect’s cellphone”.

Intelligent and honest folks no longer work there after the OBAMA re-staffing for 8 years ?

The issue is probably not unlocking the phone, it’s cracking the encryption key to access all the stored data

He may not even be using apple encryption but may be using a third party encryption app

These can be tough to break

They are called the iPhone by Apple.

“The agent painted the issue as a growing concern among law enforcement at all levels who can’t access data on devices without their owner’s credentials.”

The LEOs have a point: it used to be so much easier to solve crimes a few decades ago — when no one had encryption on their phone. (/S obviously).

Unlock one and you’ve unlocked them all.

FBI wants the crypto key, not an unlocked phone handed back to them.

That should be the solution. For chain of command, after a warrant, Apple builds a small LE room in Cupertino HQ. in it is what they need to unlock a phone used in a crime.

LE escorts the phone to the door, a checked out employee takes it in, there is a camera on the room showing partial view of what he is doing but blocked from seeing his hands on the phone, he works with maximum efficiency, once it’s unlocked, it’s handed back to LE who has been outside the door the whole time.

EXACTLY, the last time the FBI asked Apple for assistance, they wanted Apple to build a set of tools that would allow the FBI to crack any iPhone.

While I usually give the benefit of the doubt to law enforcement (although that is shrinking every day), I know that once the “master key” is in the hands of the FBI it will be about 2 minutes before it’s leaked to bad guys everywhere.

The list of things the FBI can do grows thin

I didn’t know that. That is excellent.

No way... the safe deposit box is still in a safe... Once the master key is out, bad guys will have the key within minutes.

Oh well, back to court for the FBI unless they can find someone who can get into it.

The iPhone 5c from that case used the A6 chip. Starting with the A7 (they are up to A9), it's not clear that even Apple can get into the phone.

They better figure out a way before Trump gets back from Asia. That could be a brutal Twitter thread.

“You can’t ban math”

You nailed it and that is literally what the pro-government anti-encryption forces want.
1984 had a theme where the government literally tried to ban math. 2+2=5.

And keys with the government? This government just had 22 million SF-86s security clearance forms stolen by China.
Anyone remember equifax...like a whole month ago?

If someone stores a key, there is no encryption at all.

And then try to sell me an iphone they claim has encryption? Any other bright ideas?

They are working on techniques to map a fingerprint and energize it artificially, but it isn’t common or easy.

A federal law could be passed, signed and enacted in 1 1/2 days to grant stated and/or FBI access in certain circumstances.

Why is the FBI involved? Why is this a federal concern?
