Virginias campaign for governor ends Tuesday with polling suggesting a tight contest between Republican Ed Gillespie and Democrat Ralph Northam, leaving Libertarians yet again a potentially influential factor.
Libertarian Cliff Hyra, a patent attorney, is unlikely to win a large share of the vote, with polls suggesting 3 percent at most, but its a clear possibility he will take more votes than the race's margin of victory.
The third partys leaders say that doesnt matter, and that Hyras individual-rights platform is worth supporting regardless of electoral consequences not a new argument for Libertarians, twice accused of contributing to recent Republican defeats in Virginia.

My sense is most of nova is kind of burned out from last year and all the Trump news. I don’t really sense the same intensity from successful Democrat statewide elections. I live in nova and almost forgot the election was this week while I was away. Got in an absentee ballot before I left though.
Cliff Hyra aint Robert Sarvis. He doesnt have the draw. Hell be a minor factor.
Hyra is exactly the sort of candidate the RPV should be running. Smart. Articulate. Beautiful family. But no, theyd rather run uniparty twits.
I agree.

It shouldn’t be too hard to change Virginia to a top 2 run off for state wide offices so that it wouldn’t matter.
“... the Northern part of the State sinks the vote elsewhere. Just not sure about turnout tomorrow...”
I think the dreary weather will have more of an impact than the Libertarian candidate. I hope the Dims up here in northern Virginia are still so depressed by last year’s result that the damp cold will keep them away.
Sounds to me that perhaps the republicans need do a better job of appealing to those libertarian voters. I think it’s funny and sad that the republican party is more interested in insulting and trying to blame libertarians on their own failures.
Sure hope so. In my delegate district we re a little concerned that a lot of people who have moved in the last 2 years will vote democrat. The Republican easily won last time. I think he ‘ll prevail. Would love to extend the majority.
Exactly. It's easier for them to laugh at an insult libertarians than to try to find common ground.
The Richmond area and Hampton rds aren’t as conservative as they used to be either. In the Richmond area more liberal voters have moved in the last 7 or 8 years. Chesterfield the biggest county, a suburb of Richmond was not long ago comfortable Gop, last presidential election was about 50-50. Henrico the other large county around Richmond, is easily a winner for the dems now. It’s been that way maybe 15 or 20 years there.
Losing Nova by a lot, and the Richmond area by a substantial amount. Plus Hampton roads, I think now is about 50-50. Makes it hard to win state wide. When you add in, I believe substantial voter fraud. It’s become tougher. Having said that, I’m hoping for a sweep !
Thinking libertarians are conservative is wrong....they are not. Most of them don’t vote at all...at least the ones I know. I am always shocked to learn how little they know about what’s going on.
With that mentality, expect them to run their own guy again and again.
Well said. Why not work with them, or at least try, instead of ignoring them.
The GOP stopped believing in limited government some time ago.
Yep - not a rare occasion that when enough folks vote for the truly best candidate in a race, the absolute worst one wins....the moral of the story is that politics is so messed up that second best is the best you might ever do.....except in rare occasions like the Presidential elections in 1980, 1984, 2016, and hopefully 2020.....
Lots of people moving to Virginia. Hoping they’re not bringing their evil ways with them!

It's #ElectionDay in #VA! ACU endorsed @EdWGillespie in June, and we're proud to say to Virginians today to get out and #VoteEdGillespie!
