There’s been a bunch of attempted mass shootings at churches that generally resulted in the gunman being shot by a member of the church pretty quickly. Roof was the first shooter to succeed with an attack of that nature in decades and he sent off the current trend.

I do remember reading of killings in churches where someone with a gun would have prevented it. One in particular was where a guy killed eight members of a choir practicing. It too was a Baptist church in TX.
