On Tuesday, more than 14 million people around the world, including anxious applicants in the Washington area, will begin checking computers and smartphones in one of the strangest rituals of the U.S. immigration system. When the clock strikes noon in the nation’s capital, they will be able to visit a State Department website, enter their names, years of birth and 16-digit identification numbers. Then they will press “submit” to learn whether they have won one of the world’s most coveted contests: the U.S. green-card lottery.
Each year, the Diversity Visa Lottery, as it is officially known, provides up to 50,000 randomly selected foreigners — fewer than 1 percent of those who enter the drawing — with permanent residency in the United States.
Its days may be numbered, nonetheless. The lottery appears to conflict with the president’s call for a “merit-based” immigration system. And at least two bills in the Republican-controlled Congress seek to eliminate the program.
“The Diversity Lottery is plagued with fraud, advances no economic or humanitarian interest, and does not even deliver the diversity of its namesake,” according to a news release from Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), a co-sponsor of one of the bills.
In the eyes of its supporters, the lottery provides the United States with positive public relations, countering the perception that the country no longer lives up to the ideals symbolized by the Statue of Liberty.

I wonder if Canadians were ever allowed to participate in the Green Card lottery? I briefly checked some years back (1990s), and found out that that was the case at that time.

Leftist activists have campained for Americans to have no children, or to limit their children, for 40 years.
For 40 years, leftist politicians have pushed policies to bring in tens of millions of immigrants from third world countries.
On the surface, these policies seem diametrically opposed.
But if you wish to increase leftist votes, and decrease conservative votes, they make perfect sense.
There are many over 200 countries. Ours did not become the apparent only good one by luck. We became wealthy (not the same thing as rich) without you. We do not want to become poor because of you. If you are here to build or contribute to the collective knowlege in some way welcome, though with that energy and drive perhaps you can consider helping to make your country a place that people are not desperate to leave. One would think that forcing people to live anywhere other than the US violates the Geneva Convention in some way.

The so-called “ideals” of the Statue of Liberty are the result of equating the later-added sonnet by Emma Lazarus with the actual meaning of the Statue.
There seems to be an awful lot of supposedly educated people who actually believe that “Give us your poor,” etcetera are part of the actual Statue.
Another Uniparty ploy to steal our country from us by flooding it with foreigners.
Many of these foreigners are openly hostile to Americans and our way of life.
Trump, on the basis of what happened in NYC yesterday, should cancel the “Diversity Lottery” outright. We don’t need 50,000 of anybodies let in here at this juncture, especially Muslims. Personally, I’d like to see ICE spend some time rounding up and deporting Muslims. Mexicans, do not represent terrorist for the most part.

Religious persecution! The 1st Amendment to the US Constitution calls for freedom of religion. The truck driver was merely following his religion, killing infidels. Covered under the Constitution!

This is absolutely one of the craziest things I have ever heard of. I have extremely low expectations for any program run by the federal government but this is even worse than I may have imagined.
Everything politicians do is insanity to normal Americans. But they keep electing them.
20 minutes after hitting Submit,, winners are auctioning off their slots to the highest bidder on OBoy to any bidder, from any nation.
You know, who needs borders.. when Dems are looking for new ways to fleece the nation of its defenses.
