WASHINGTONTexas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz warned Tuesday that the United States would face massive economic costs if President Donald Trump killed the North American Free Trade Agreement but that Trump might go ahead and make that decision.
Cruz said NAFTA has created millions of jobs across the United States, and he said Texans believe in international trade. He expressed concern that Trump, whom he generally supports, would seek to use the ongoing NAFTA renegotiation to reduce trade and erect protectionist barriers rather than to expand trade.
Reducing access to the Canadian and Mexican markets, Cruz said, would do profound damage to the American economy and to Texas in particular.
Which direction will the administration go? I will tell you candidly: I dont know, Cruz said at the pro-NAFTA U.S. Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday. His comments highlight the uncertainty surrounding Donald Trumps intentions.

Well have to replace him in his primary with no help from Bannon or Trump.
Is there any scuttlebutt about any potential challengers?
We are one year and and six days away from the election.
Got your wires crossed there my FRiend.
Political globalism threatens national borders and national sovereignty. Don’t be like so many and confuse that with free trade economics which in no way threatens national sovereignty or borders. In fact, countries that engage in free trade end up stronger nationally.
You do understand that NAFTA has created countless jobs and billions in monetary movement within the US?
You also do understand why manufacturers have moved to Mexico and Canada correct? It wasnt the cost of employee if you fancy in that direction. It is because Mexico has over 50, yes 50 unilateral trade agreements with numerous nations for supply and material to MANUFACTURE goods. While the US and its meddling and protective tarrifs and choking regulations have absolutely decimated the free transfer of manufacturing and wealth.
Lyin Ted’s at it again trying to convince us he’s being “candid”. If he doesn’t announce that he’s being candid, does that mean he’s lying?
The government is supposed to make it’s money through import taxes, not income taxes. It’s nice to have goods from other countries, but we are capable of excellent quality goods too. The point is to kick-start domestic manufacturing once again. I’m not sure globalists understand the concept of keeping one’s own home in good condition. They want to give everyone else’s goods away while their own house crumbles.
Ted, this is why YOU are NOT President.
Nobody wants to stop trade, we want to tax imports like our founders did. You can buy from anyone, just pay the duty if it is an import or find a domestic supplier. If none exit then the economic pressure to create one will be very strong.
I have to pay a duty(income tax) just to work in this "progressive" country, and you act like a tariff is going to kill you. Nobody would ever claim a tariff was progressive in any way.
Were you really a Marine. I don't believe it.
Folks here have their terms discombobulated and bass ackwards. They also confuse populism as a principle (conservatism) vs a movement. There is nothing more conservative than complete free trade with Government completely out of the way of picking winners and losers in the marketplace.
Well because ya know, Government knows best right?
And a $50B annual trade deficit. But we'll IGNORE TAHT, right?
I hope you go out of business, because apparently you can't deal with your fellow Americans. Loser.
Hey Ted, drive through what used to be the NC furniture and textile towns. It can’t get any worse than it is now.
The Republican Party Platform(1924)
In the history of the nation the protective tariff system has ever justified itself by restoring confidence, promoting industrial activity and employment, enormously increasing our purchasing power and bringing increased prosperity to all our people.
Those were tax imports to raise money for the federal government (pre income tax). The Government doesnt need anymore money, they dont need to implement tarrifs. In fact they need to get the hell out of the way and their damned hands out of my pockets.
So in addition to tax this and tax that on the federal, state, and local levels lets now punish free trade and also continue regulating the companies that use it.
Ya that makes perfect sense because Government knows best
You understand that the trade deficit is a misnomer right? Lets say a Mexican company opens a large business here to assemble parts. That adds to the trade deficit. What about a Canadian citizen that places millions of dollars into a US bank that employs a couple hundred US citizens? That too adds to this magical deficit folks wish to trot out.
Deficits are not always bad
You know, if these dumb ass Republicans would keep their mouth shut Trump would make a better deal with NAFTA. If Canada and Mexico think Trump is going to cancel the deal they would fold like a cheap suit. Instead the Republicans give them reassurances and them become emboldened
Yeah, like Great Brittain!
You're killing me!
farming also adds a very large portion to the deficit again not a bad measure
You are an idiot.
More confusion from central_va who refuses to learn anything.
There’s a big difference between protecting a brand new fledgling country in the 1700’s and protecting the most powerful country in the world in the 2000’s.
Been over all this before with central_va.
In point of fact, the whole thing with TPP was that they wanted to pay 300 dollars a month to Vietnamese workers to produce goods they would then sell here. It's perfectly obvious from just that one example why that threatens "national soverignty or borders." It gets even worse when you consider that the "free traders," including Ted Cruz's wife and major Republicans, also openly speak of setting up supragovernmental organizations--in alliance with Mexico and Canada--to manage the "Free trade of workers" back and forth across the border. See the CFR on this. It's for this ultimate goal that Republicans do NOT want to enforce the borders, build the wall, or have any sort of immigration policy other than expanding immigration: because it interfered with their plans of getting us to a point politically where we'd be A-OK with an expansion of NAFTA beyond all imagination.
Sure glad Scruze is where he is today. He’s always on the side of those who take advantage of us here in North America. Oh well, his is a CubanoCanadian, so it follows that he’d be for our “trading partners” even if it makes our country poorer.
