The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, was evacuated from a U.N. camp for displaced people in South Sudan on Wednesday because of a demonstration against President Salva Kiir, witnesses said.
Shortly after Haley left the camp, U.N. security guards fired tear gas to disperse the crowd of more than 100 residents who looted and destroyed the office of a charity operating there, an aid worker at the camp said. The aid worker spoke on condition of anonymity out of safety fears.
Haley, in the middle of a three-country African visit, met earlier Wednesday with Kiir over the countrys long civil war. Speaking later to U.N. station Radio Miraya, Haley said she warned Kiir that the U.S. no longer trusted South Sudans government and was no longer prepared to wait for change. She did not give details.
The United Nations confirmed the incident with Haley, saying camp residents became upset that she was not able to meet with them, due to time constraint. The U.S. Embassy did not comment on Haleys evacuation.
Frustration has been growing inside and outside South Sudan over the conflict that has killed tens of thousands and created Africas largest displacement
People are not happy, said one resident of the U.N. camp, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of his safety. He said camp residents had been waiting to hand Haley a letter with their position on the current crisis. The U.N. said a petition was delivered before Haleys departure.
We are disappointed by what we are seeing. This is not what we thought we were investing in, Haley said in remarks later released by the U.N. What we thought we were investing in was a free, fair society where people could be safe and South Sudan is the opposite of that.
Girl i know was evacuated out of there a few years ago by special forces...she was working for an NGO..
She works for a christian charity now and only goes where there are no Muslims or very few..
what’s that Nuke it from orbit thing again
Like Japan..........................
I’m surprised she even tried to go there. What I’ve read is that is one of the most unstable, dangerous places on the planet.
The historic conflict between ethnicities continues in the South Sudan despite achieving independence. The only resolution to the eternal problem is the division of South Sudan into Dinka-dominated Barh al-Ghazal, Nuer and Shilluk in White Nile, and the various tribes in southernmost Equatoria. The Dinka-Nuer hatred will not be overcome by negotiations. A tripartite South Sudan will not work. No matter how much the African potentates oppose the further division of Africa, to gain peace it is the only way out.
