Utahns are feeling more extreme summer heat due to climate change, study says

A majority of Americans — and Utahns — are facing more days of extreme heat each summer than they did a few decades ago, according to a study that highlights the health effects of that trend.

The study released Tuesday by the environmental advocacy group Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) finds that two-thirds of the U.S. population, or about 210 million people, live in counties that have faced more extreme heat days each year over the past decade than they did from 1961 to 1990.

The NRDC cited Utah as one of 20 states, plus Washington, D.C., with populations especially hard hit by extended and sweltering heat waves. Heat stress, the report said, currently causes almost 250 emergency room visits per year in the state.

“If we keep pouring climate pollutants such as carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, we will face a level of global warming in which our best efforts will be inadequate to prevent adverse impacts of heat on our health,” said Linda Rudolph, director for the Center for Climate Change and Health at the California-based nonprofit Public Health Institute.

In Utah, average temperatures have climbed almost 2 degrees since the early 1990s. And if carbon pollution levels continue to rise at their current pace globally, average temperatures in the state could be 13 degrees higher than the historical averages by the end of the century, the NRDC said.

“Somehow, it was hotter then: a black dog suffered on a summer’s day; bony mules hitched to Hoover carts flicked flies in the sweltering shade of the live oaks on the square. Men’s stiff collars wilted by nine in the morning. Ladies bathed before noon, after their three o’clock naps, and by nightfall were like soft teacakes with frostings of sweat and sweet talcum.”

Here’s what I learned in the 6th grade:

The solar system is held together by gravitational pull. The earth revolves around the sun, while spinning on its axis. Climate is determined by where the sun’s thermo radiation contacts the earth along its geographic meridium.

The only way for a climate to change is if the earth were to shift on its axis.

Whew! I am so glad it's climate change and NOT the sun causing this! Can you imagine if it were the sun? What could we possibly do about the sun if the sun caused climate change? Regulate it away? /s

Luke (the author) was probably born in 1960...

Good point. I was born in '41, but not only can I read history, I also had a farmer father who was born in 1900 and liked to talk about how tough the "old days" were.
