The judge deciding Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl's punishment said Monday he is concerned that President Donald Trump's comments about the case could impact the public's perception of the military justice system.
Sentencing was set to begin Monday for Bergdahl on charges that he endangered comrades by walking off his post in Afghanistan in 2009. But the judge, Army Col. Jeffery R. Nance, instead heard last-minute arguments by defense attorneys that recent comments by Trump are preventing a fair proceeding. Bergdahl faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.
Nance allowed the attorneys to question him about whether he was swayed by Trump's comments. Nance said he wasn't aware of the comments beyond what was in the legal motions. Nance said he plans to retire as a colonel in about a year and isn't motivated by pleasing commanders to win a future promotion.
"I don't have any doubt whatsoever that I can be fair and impartial in the sentencing in this matter," Nance said.

Send his ass back to Afghanistan.
Did he have any concerns about Obama honoring Bergdahl’s parents with a Rose Garden event?
Sounds like he’s gonna go easy on the deserter, if he’s thinking there might be some in the military who won’t be happy with the decision.
Judges should not be influenced by or afraid of such things. It’s in rules and procedures in some places, IIRC.
Anything less that life is wrong since they’re not going to shoot him.
Trump’s comments might affect public perception??? You have got to be kidding me! He wasn’t President at the time! Bergdahl has confessed and even made comments that the Taliban was more ‘fair’ with him than the Army has been. I hope the judge isn’t wimping out, because the public wants Bergdahl put away forever. Actually, most want him executed, but we all know that won’t happen.
The turd plead guilty .... how is anything Trump or anyone else is affecting the trial .... sounds like an Obama bootlicker judge.
Gee, shouldn’t he be concerned that then President Obama traded five Terrorists for Bergdahl, invited his Parents to the White House and how that decision affects the Case?
How about the five Soldiers, or was it six, who died looking for the Deserter? Does that have any bearing on the Punishment the Court will render for the admitted Deserter?
We know damn well that there are Liberals who think Obama should have Pardoned Bergdhal.
Army Col. Jeffrey Nance....coming soon to a democrat House primary near you!
Desertion in time of war, he deserves no less than Pvt. Slovik!
Maybe they’ll let him do a sex-change operation so he can go on the talk-show circuit.
My exact first thought, too. Obama and that scuzzy moslem father speaking Arabic in the Rose Garden. Obama’s face lighting up when he hears Arabic spoken. Susan Rice calling the traitor a hero. None of that influenced the public?
Pay per view- Firing Squad-Funds go to families of dead soldiers. Worries over Judge.
Why is it wrong for Donald Trump to comment on this case and not for 0bama and Susan Rice?
Because liberals expect that Donald Trump should know better.
We all know why they think he should know better and they would not.
If more could be given to him than Slovik, it ought to be. Slovak, after all, simply refused to serve. He didn’t voluntarily desert to the enemy, as Bergdahl did. There has seldom been such a case of desertion and treason as here.
Another Obama holdover.
“the judge, Army Col. Jeffery R. Nance”
There are two ass-hats, Bergdahl and this judge. At the time Trump spoke, he was a private citizen. Just wished they were as concerned about what I’ve said about Bergdahl, because I want him executed! Note: never trust anyone named Jeffery.
Truth sounds like hate to those who hate truth. Eff the impact and this traitor.
Command influence toward the judge and the sentence he gives Bergdhal.
