U.S. agency scraps unused telegraph regulations in Trump rules purge

The U.S. government is scrapping rules on telegraphs even though carriers no longer exist, part of the Trump administration’s effort to slash regulations, the Federal Communications Commission said on Thursday.

The last Western Union telegram in the United States was sent in 2006 and the commission had stopped enforcing the rules in 2013. The last major telegram service worldwide ended in India in 2013.

The FCC said in a notice it was removing “outmoded regulations” on telegraphs effective in November to “further our goals of reducing regulatory burdens, eliminating unnecessary rule provisions, and making the agency as efficient and effective as possible.”

10 seconds on Wikipedia:

In motor fuel[edit]
TEL was extensively used as a gasoline additive beginning in the 1920s,[10] wherein it served as an effective antiknock agent and prevented exhaust valve and valve seat wear. Concerns were raised in reputable journals almost immediately of likely health outcomes of fine particles of lead in the atmosphere.[11]

Valve wear preventive[edit]
Tetraethyl lead works as a buffer against microwelds forming between the hot exhaust valves and their seats.[12] Once these valves reopen, the microwelds pull apart and leave the valves with a rough surface that would abrade the seats, leading to valve recession. When lead began to be phased out of motor fuel, the automotive industry began specifying hardened valve seats and upgraded exhaust valve materials to prevent valve recession without lead.[13]

Antiknock agent[edit]
A gasoline-fueled reciprocating engine requires fuel of sufficient octane rating to prevent uncontrolled combustion known as engine knocking (knock or ping).[9] Antiknock agents allow the use of higher compression ratios for greater efficiency[14] and peak power.[15] Adding varying amounts of additives like low percentage TEL or high percentage ethanol to gasoline, allowed easy, inexpensive control of octane ratings. TEL offered the business advantage of being commercially profitable because it could be patented.[10] Aviation spirits with TEL used in WWII reached 150 octane to enable supercharged engines such as the Rolls-Royce Merlin and Griffon to reach high horse power ratings at altitude.[16] In military aviation, TEL manipulation allowed a range of different fuels to be tailored for particular flight conditions.

In 1935 the licence to produce TEL was given to I.G.Farben enabling the newly formed German Luftwaffe to use high-octane gasoline. A company, Ethyl GmbH, was formed that produced TEL at two sites in Germany with a government contract from 10 June 1936.[17]

This isn’t entirely true - you can still send telegrams...albeit it isn’t part of any large carriers business model anymore.

In any event, another rule they scrapped per a video message from Kushner indicated was the Y2K compliance program - obviously a complete waste of time and resources. How many other thousands of regulations have piled up over the years that no one thought to review and scrap once they no longer had a purpose? They all add up to a lot of wasted $$$.

They still had a 360 at my new employers' place in 1998, running an old payroll program for another month or so. They tried for a few months to get someone to take it off their hands, even for free. No takers. Went into the landfill.

I'm going to hazard a guess that you were a programmer (probably IBM Mainframe COBOL and Assembler), and are familiar with JCL and IBM Utilities.   Am I close?

Kind of like those old TV's.   They don't want them donated at Goodwill or St. Vinny's anymore.

“Reuters says this as if it is a bad thing!”

It’s not the ending of the rules that bothers them (since there are no more telegraphs), rather it’s that the people who enforce those rules will now be out of a job.

(Democrat logic)

Yes. I had a few 360 assembler classes in the late 70s.

LOL. I was in the supply house the other day with Led Zeppelin playing on the radio.

I said hey, Led Zeppelin. The guy behind the counter said. “I dunno who it is, that was before my time.”
