Trump’s tax proposal won’t actually help the middle class.
Washington Post ^ | 19 Oct 17 | By Catherine Rampell

President Trump campaigned on helping the little guy. His latest tax proposal, he says, is about helping the middle guy.

“It’s a middle-class bill,” Trump promised an audience of truckers last week.

Other administration officials and House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.) have also claimed that their primary objective in reconfiguring the tax code is to help the middle class, not the wealthy.

It’s not rocket science.

I am an Aerospace Engineer. I understand Rocket Science. I also understand this tax bill. And I will, and millions of others, will get creamed by it.

“:Corporations DO PAY taxes. If they didn’t, they would not be arguing for tax relief.”

No, you labor, you pay. Corporations cannot possibly labor. They do not exist. Your labor is taken by the corporations in the form of monetary payments.

They want tax relief because they want to invest what you paid them into making their companies larger instead of having to pass on the money you paid them to the government.

If a company wants to save up for an investment past 31 December (or their fiscal year end) they have to pay taxes on that money. They can’t save for several years in a row, it gets taxed.

Get an education before spouting such nonsense as you do.

Middle class tax payers are expected to benefit from being put in a lower tax bracket (not known yet what they are) and the hike of the standard deduction. For me, I can itemize deductions only if I work hard at keeping all records, the doubling of the standard deduction will push me into the non-itemizing group and my tax preparation team will not have to work so hard. If they don’t drop my costs I can go back to doing my taxes myself.

That has nothing to do with the fact that eliminating the state and local decduction will screw over millions of middle class Americans in this proposed bill.

Translation: You’re an emotional little girl.

OK - so you cannot dispute the facts of the bill, and now you are retreating to become a child.

Wake me up when you become an adult and we can continue the discussion.

44 million out of how many? That would be roughly 240 million.

Umm, you do realize that only 85 million Americans actually pay federal income taxes (e.g. actually have a tax liability). So 44 million is over half of all actual tax payers.

I am a military veteran.

That's nice.

I served this nation in combat (did you???)

Yes.

...because I work and live in a state you and Paul Ryan have contempt for, I am less of an American?

I can't speak for Paul Ryan (nor would I want to), but where the hell are you getting this from? Where did anything I write get you to that extremely defensive conclusion?

My point is that more politics needs to be local politics. You can choke your mayor a hell of a lot easier than you can choke the Speaker of the House. So choke him. Why does the FedGov (and by extension all the rest of the U.S.) need to subsidize your state's and city's terrible tax policies? Hold their feet to the fire!

Do you really want to try to "spin" this that way here on Free Republic?

Do you think we are so stupid?

You are arguing for your side - I get that. But don't think the rest of us are idiots.

Ryan looks pretty worried — enough so that he can’t keep the look out of his eyes.

Quadruple the corporate and the individual rate for money going to H1-Bs.

This would have the additional benefit of soaking the Left Coast oligarchs.

Taxes owed are taxes owed. No one should get to pay less because they paid somewhere else. Do I get to defer/reduce my sales tax because I paid the max SS tax? Why can’t I? Shifting taxes to someone else is unfair and corrupt. My sales tax is 9%. My state income tax is at the 5% range. Should I pay less sales tax because I paid more SS tax? No! Why is your situation different? Oh yeah that’s right it benefits you under the current million page tax code. No more holes so pay your tax without getting a deduction for some but not all continuing the scam taxes.

I currently get lots of tax deductions but it’s intellectually unfair and corrupt. It lets the GOV social engineer. I say kill them all. Pay my tax. You pay yours. If I get subsidized by you it’s unfair. If you get subsidized you think it’s fair. That isn’t conservative it’s allowing the GOV to further break Americans into smaller special interest groups and it’s disgusting. Man up and pay your bills without shifting them to others. That’s a generic you not specific to you. I have no idea about your details or you about me.

You don’t even know how taxes work.

Your claim that 44 million will be harmed by an elimination of State tax deductions is silly since you didn’t include that the individual deduction is being doubled to more than cover that loss. There aren’t 44 million people that pay more in that situation; they pay less.

You’re an idiot for listening to the liberal media claiming otherwise.

Stop running on liberal emotions and try working with facts.

Don't talk down to me CodeToad in an attempt to intimidate me. I understand the facts of this bill.

If you own a business, and you want to sell you stuff to me, and overwhelm the airwaves to advertise your stuff. Great. And if I chose to buy your stuff - good.

But that does not make you a more moral or deserving person than the rest of us. Do you understand?

I believe in capitalism, the free market, and all of that. But we are talking specifics here. As adults.

This bill was written by K Street Lobbyists, to pay off their clients.

And if you don't know that, you should.

but where the hell are you getting this from?

Don't you read the news? Do you think I am making this up?

Really?

This tax bill is in jeopardy because of this very issue.

Are you this obtuse?

Taxes owed are taxes owed.

Wow. Tax 101.

Even Jesus said that.

No one should get to pay less because they paid somewhere else.

Tell that to the rich tax lawyers.

Are you for real?

You don’t even know how taxes work.

But you do, right?

And you want to manipulate the taxes so that you benefit more than others? Is that a fair statement?

I think it is.

And when someone challenges you on it, you get very angry.

If I understand his plan correctly, he wants to double the standard deduction. That would help my middle class family immensely.

Remove the $4050 personal exemption that you have for yourself and each member of your family, as this plan does, and then tell me what your additional standard deduction nets out to. Plus now I understand that they're talking about capping the tax-free 401K deductions at $2400. What does that do to you?
