Washington (CNN)He campaigned and won vowing to shake up Washington. Now, President Donald Trump is again breaking with tradition on a more personal matter: keeping a pet at the White House.
The illustrious tradition of keeping pets in the White House dates back to Thomas Jefferson, who kept a mockingbird and a couple of bear cubs during his presidency. Throughout the years, presidential pets became celebrities of sorts.
"It softens their image, it broadens their appeal," Ed Lengel, chief historian at the White House Historical Association, told CNN. "They help create an atmosphere of the White House as a family, a lived-in place and not just a stiff museum, but a place where a family lives and plays and enjoys each other's company." For an image-conscious President, Trump seems to be in little rush to add a furry friend to the White House brood, making his the only first family in modern presidential history without a pet.
"There are no plans at this time" to add a pet to the first family, East Wing communications director Stephanie Grisham told CNN.
Trump lived with a poodle, Chappy, with his first wife, Ivana, who wrote in her memoir, "Raising Trump," that "Donald was not a dog fan."

Trump and his visit with Westminster Winners
"Sadie the Scottish Terrier was the first Westminster winner to have a meeting with The Donald in his glittering Manhattan tower, and Miss P the beagle, Banana Joe the affenpinscher and Hickory the Scottish deerhound all followed in her paw steps.
President Trump was very welcoming to both me and Miss P, the beagles handler, Will Alexander, said of their 2015 meeting. We spoke of mostly sports and dogs.
The whole time he was holding her in his arms. She even left beagle hair on his black suit and it didnt faze him, he added."
Sounds like he's OK with dogs to me.
7. A tactic that drags on too long becomes a drag. Dont become old news.
Looks like Hillary forgot this one
I want to know what happened to BO.
I think it’s something we’d all like to know.
Was he kicked out after fulfilling his role?
Or did he finally end up in a casserole?
Pence also has a house rabbit. Its a great pet.
Maybe Barron should get a gekko and say, “Greed is good.” Less moral obligation than with an ignored photo dog, lie Buddy the Lab, or the Obama’s Portuguese water spaniel. Anyone can feed a lizard.
I wouldn’t have a pet in the WH if I were president.
Can you believe it! My cats are giving me a hard time making this post....
Go away!
Ac$4wehhhhhhhh5.56mm
He should get a Russian Wolfhound!
notice the dogs are gone so are his daughters and wife.
That's diversity.
We're all for being different
As long as we're all different the same.
Just because congress has gone to the dogs doesn’t mean the White House has to follow suit.

BOOM. A pet lion would be awesome for Trump. Feed it donkey meat.
I think it would be nice for them to have a pet, though. Maybe it's because he is quite hyper about germs. I wish Barron could have grown up with at least a dog. A child's life and heart is so very enriched by a loving pet.
Maybe they should try having a pet. Admitting it is a first for them, and they are merely doing it because so many people have recommended that they get one. I think President Trump would be very amazed at how much he could care for a dog or a cat.
Maybe with their approval someone could gift them a pet.

Donald needs these- LOTS OF THESE!
About the only thing I liked about Jimmy Carter was Amy’s Siamese cat named Misty Malarkey Ying Yang. Loved the name, loved the cross-eyed cat.
The fake news media went BERSERK when W didn’t bring his adopted feral cat Ernie to the White House. W gave Ernie to a cat-loving friend because Ernie loved to sharpen his claws on EVERYTHING and W and Laura were concerned he would damage furniture in the White House. They also didn’t want to declaw him. They did bring their female black kitty India to the White House. They left their cow Ofelia on their ranch in Texas.
Alinsky and His rules....
Thanks.
