Washington (CNN)He campaigned and won vowing to shake up Washington. Now, President Donald Trump is again breaking with tradition on a more personal matter: keeping a pet at the White House.
The illustrious tradition of keeping pets in the White House dates back to Thomas Jefferson, who kept a mockingbird and a couple of bear cubs during his presidency. Throughout the years, presidential pets became celebrities of sorts.
"It softens their image, it broadens their appeal," Ed Lengel, chief historian at the White House Historical Association, told CNN. "They help create an atmosphere of the White House as a family, a lived-in place and not just a stiff museum, but a place where a family lives and plays and enjoys each other's company." For an image-conscious President, Trump seems to be in little rush to add a furry friend to the White House brood, making his the only first family in modern presidential history without a pet.
"There are no plans at this time" to add a pet to the first family, East Wing communications director Stephanie Grisham told CNN.
Trump lived with a poodle, Chappy, with his first wife, Ivana, who wrote in her memoir, "Raising Trump," that "Donald was not a dog fan."

The first dog is normally crap. Obamas were not dog people. The dogs were props. In fact there were two because they never got out and the Obamas left them alone. So they got another dog so as to let them keep each other company. LBJ was a dog person. Not many others were.
He should at least get an orange kitten and pose with it on his head.

Trump is working doggedly to make America great again, which makes him the cat’s meow to the rest of us.
It is cruel to have any animal that needs love and affection,and you are too busy to be home with them to give them that care. What a bunch of idiots.I would hate to be their pets. A good pet for them alligator.

Thank you I see him working too... working his ass off. He probably doesn’t have time for a pet, his child is in school working hard and his wife is busy as well. Better they don’t have a pet then palm one off on somebody else to take care of and just trott it out for photo ops.

Trump’s a germaphobe... but he could get an octopussy and drive the press crazy at press conferences by only answering the questions of those reporters brave enough to grab it out of the tank.
He’s broken with many traditions (like hosting Ramadan dinners at the WH and attending the WH correspondence dinner and Kennedy Center honors), and every last one needed breaking. Bigly.
I think the Bushes were dog lovers.
He could name the octopus “Hillary” due to the similar public persona the pet and Ms. Clinton would share.
