Despite Chicago’s alarming, if select, murder statistics and routine singling out by President Donald Trump for gun violence, this lakeside metropolis was just ranked one of the safest cities in the world.
The Economist Intelligence Unit, a London-based research firm affiliated with the Economist magazine, named Chicago to its 2017 Safe Cities Index, issued Thursday — one of only three U.S. cities to crack the top 20 — largely based on advances in digital security.
Chicago, at 19th safest, narrowly trailed the other top-20 U.S. representatives, San Francisco at 15th and Los Angles at 18th. Tokyo, Singapore and Osaka topped the overall list, an order that has remained unchanged since 2015. Buenos Aires was the only city in the so-called developing world in the top half of the index.

Don’t know about DC, but the others probably arrest their violent mentally ill instead of letting them live on downtown streets.
Almost all the murders occur in three or four neighborhoods. My old neighborhood on the NW side was as safe as a small town. Our sons were raised there without incident.
However, anyone visiting would do well to avoid areas such as Austin and that includes any black visitors.
Other than that the city is a treasure with something everyone can enjoy. The music here is the tops, none better anywhere. How many can enjoy something as fabulous as the Monteverdi “Orfio” I had the good fortune to see last night?
The food is spectacular includes Italian, Mexican, Chinese, Thai and any other cuisine you would want. After the opera it was to Greektown for a feast.

By worldly standards, yes Chicago is probaly “safer” than alot of cities around the world. But by American standards, its dangerous.
Rio and Caracas?
In all things cultural and culinary you cannot possibly be placing Chicago before NYC...are you?
You may enjoy the culture but pay tax upon tax to finance the pleasure of living in a democrat controlled paradise.
Well, may be true from the perspective of someone planning on visiting. I'd go there in a heartbeat, given a reason, and avoid the problem areas.
But, there is still the 750+ yearly murders to warrant it being an unsafe city, from a statistical viewpoint. In light of their limited view of individual protection, worthy of using to full advantage.
