tired of the gross ignorance on Free Republic concerning BSA.

I sort of agree. I was taking my daughter to Philmont with her explorer crew about 4 years ago just after all the controversy started. We had an experience that she will remember with her dad for a lifetime. The new "rules" never really came up. We followed the guidelines of youth protection and all the adults knew each other so no problem. I think that like good families, scouts are best run locally and the locals can manage the situations and keep scouting positive.

It is both shameful and embarrassing that at a national level it has become political and that members Christian values have been challenged, but locally it can still be inspirational to youth, whether boys or girls.

My daughter was a very outdoors type, not a tom boy but no girly girl either. She could outshoot anyone in camp in rifle, shotgun, and archery, and pack a pack and do an overnight hike as good as any boy. I taught her that way and she loves it. I am glad that BSA provided at least some opportunity for her as the Girl Scout programs have been garbage for decades.

I can only speak to my own experience regarding BSA.

I spent most of my youth in the Cub Scout/ Webelo/ Boy Scout program. It was extremely beneficial to me and I had a number of great experiences including camping, fishing, canoeing, archery, even riflery. I grew up in a rough urban area so those excursions did me a lot of good. Even when we met in the city, we did a lot of fun and wholesome things like Pinewood Derby, hiking and historical tours. Even a visit to a monastery, which was quite the experience.

I probably would never have joined the Marine Corps if I did not have the Scouting experience.

I then put my own two sons through the full program during the 1990s. They also had a very good experience with lots of camping and other activities such as sleepovers in Museums and at a local minor league ballbark in which we saw the game and then setup tents in the outfield.

During that time, all this political nonsense was going on at the national level but that never seemed to filter down to the local level. All the scoutmasters and volunteers were first rate and the kids all had a great time in the program.

At some of these activities, the sisters of scouts tagged along and a good number of mothers volunteered as well and it was never a problem as we could never seem to find enough dads to participate.

So I can agree with you that at the local level, a good experience can still be had.
