Las Vegas shooter fired 'incendiary' rounds at fuel tank
CNN ^ | 6:37 PM ET, Tue October 10, 2017 | Kyung Lah and Scott Glover, CNN

Las Vegas gunman Stephen Paddock fired special "incendiary" bullets at a 43,000-barrel fuel tank in what investigators believe was an attempt to cause an explosion, two law enforcement sources told CNN.

Those types of rounds, meant to ignite what they hit, were found inside Paddock's room at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino and near the fuel tank a short distance away on the grounds of McCarran International Airport, the sources said.

Authorities have previously disclosed that Paddock fired at the tank and struck it with two rifle rounds, when he opened fire on the crowd below from his 32nd floor hotel room on October 1. They had not disclosed that he used incendiary rounds to fire at the tank, which contains jet fuel.

The sources, briefed on the investigation but not authorized to speak publicly, said the incendiary rounds were recovered in an area near the tank.

It is unclear if the rounds that struck the tank were also of the incendiary variety. Chris Jones, an airport spokesman, said he was unaware of any rounds being recovered other than those that struck the tank...

Investigators also recovered tracer rounds from Paddock's room. Those rounds produce a flame when fired and allow the shooter to follow the bullet's path for more precise aim, according to the sources, who requested not to be named because they are not authorized to speak publicly about such details. There is no evidence the tracer rounds were used during the attack, the sources said.

Investigators also found "survival gear" in Paddock's room, including bulletproof vests and a breathing apparatus, the sources said.

Well, good thing that he didn’t have API (armor-piercing incendiary) rounds. These are sometimes available in bullet form (rarely as assembled rounds, in my experience), are somewhat costly, and have to be hand-loaded into a round of ammo. Never done that with an API round, and testing would have to be in the middle of nowhere with nothing flammable around.

IF this report is accurate (emphasis on IF), then he clearly intended to get away - first, by creating a diversion, and second because of the vests. So, why’d he cap himself (IF he did)??? Doesn’t seem logical, especially as he apparently died well before the Popo showed up.

The more I hear about this case, the less I believe the official version.

“If he were shooting high caliber armor piercing and then tracers it could have been a problem.”

Or API...which would be a whole lot easier. All done in one operation.

“Could gunfire in different directions cause one to think two different shooters?”

Definitely - especially taking into account the entirely different echo patterns. I bet the experts will be able to tell which window he was shooting out of and when.

The one window opened up to other tall buildings (like where the cabbie captured what I believe are very loud echoes).

The other window faced open space - so less echoes.

I’ve heard several investigators refer to him as a high I.Q. perp. He was smart enough to amass a fortune and was also a former employee of Lockheed-Martin working on equipment for NASA,

Smart in some areas does not mean he had common sense.

One of the most intelligent individuals I know did not even know how to hook up battery cables to jump start his car.

Actually, the shooter probably was using armor piercing incendiary rounds.

Pure incendiary rounds are less common than the armor piercing style.

The sources, briefed on the investigation but not authorized to speak publicly

We ask every day: Why the secrecy?

The gunman, who has already been declared a lone wolf (if you believe that) is dead. There will be no case brought against him.

58 people, meanwhile, lay dead from his madness. Their lives are ended, their families and friends in shock and anguish.

Whose feelings and sensibilities, apart from their own, are the police and investigators protecting? What advantage is there in secrecy? Why do they think they should present The Full Official Narrative (TM) and why do they think we will believe it?

Petroleum tanks are well protected against rifle fire. Period.

He planned to walk after blowing up his room and the car. Why all the explosives, bulletproof vest and breathing device. The master explosion was the fuel tanks. This was going to be huge. It would be nice to know his firing sequence. People or fuel tanks .
You can tell the motive by looking at the people he killed. Who were they? It wasn’t a teachers convention.

I didn’t know they had AP incendiaries.

Nope. For someone planning to escape via a major explosion, I wouldn't put it past someone else pulling the trigger that killed him.

Clearer as to what I am implying here?

He was budgeted for a Barrett; why didn’t he simply but THAT...?

50 BMG tracer rounds would be hard to come by, but...it’s miles better than a .308

That would have pretty much been impossible, but then again something tells me he wasn’t in his right mind. Sounds like some manic diabolic plan. Boy did it fail.
It’s horrible 58 people were killed, but imagine if what he really planned actually happened?!

This exactly right. however as soon as they found out the room they knew who he was in a short time.
The man hunt would have been immediate and fierce.

The sheriff already stated that he shot at the tanks, and even witnessed from the concert gave interviews saying they heard first shots hit those tanks a ‘ping’.

Authorities have previously disclosed that Paddock fired at the tank and struck it with two rifle rounds,

The result of poor muzzle control and/or ricochet.
