The original article defending his ancestor can be found here:
How about the poor Clovis people? Did the AmerInds take America away from them?
A refutation of his article by SALON, is written here:

The title:
Christopher Columbus descendant butchers history in op-ed:
Christopher Columbus XX is defending his ancestor from criticism but doesnt address some key issues
The problem is that the lefties never let the FACTS stand in their way.
This is what they want to celebrate, what the left believes is far superior to Western Civilization:
What’s to defend?
The Pre-columbian Americas were (for the most part) either primitive or barbaric.
Or both primitive and barbaric.
Columbus XX? Is he a rapper?
Amazing how so many of the people who object to Columbus Day are still here.
If the US is so suck, they should renounce their citizenship and return to where their ancestors originated.
If Columbus hadn’t come here, someone would have. If not the Europeans, the Chinese. Does anyone believe that the Indians would have fared any better under Chinese domination?
Let’s say that no one ever came here, and the natives were allowed to remain in control here. What would it be like? They had been here for thousands of years, yet they hadn’t even invented the wheel, and lived in huts or teepees, and were largely a hunter gatherer society. They would probably have made little progress, and may very well have died out all on their own.
If it wasn’t for Columbus, there wouldn’t be a Columbia which supplies liberals their cocaine.
"What is happening at the hands of Columbus detractors is political, not historical."
BINGO!
Columbus Day is perpetually overlooked as an opportune time to discuss Islamic jihad through the centuries. Spain invested in Christopher Columbus who took enormous personal risk to find an alternate sailing route to the Indies. Why? To avoid the Islamic piracy which was bankrupting European merchants pursuing trade throughout the Mediterranean.
Columbus Day provides a golden opportunity to teach the history of battling Islamic hegemony.
It's no wonder the left is concentrating on delegitimizing Christopher Columbus' milestone achievements.
The words used to describe the shape of the earth in the quran are :
All are synonyms for flat in arabic no where in the quran does it say or hint that the world is a sphere and when you ask a sheikh why does God use all the words for flat to describe Earth he just say's "Oh it's just metaphorical"
the original op-ed was posted earlier, but got nuked, I think because of the source (USA Today).
Happy Columbus Day....
