It's politically correct nowadays to trash the Franciscan missionaries in California (a statue of Junipero Serra was recently vandalized in Santa Barbara), to accuse them of enslaving the Indians. The friars went there to save souls and lived a life of poverty and hardship themselves.
Things began to deteriorate pretty soon after the missions were secularized a few years after Mexican independence.
