Have Tattoos? Well … Study Says: Lower Your Professional Expectations

Have a tattoo? If the answer is “yes,” it’s more likely you’re unemployed or completely out of the labor force. On average, your income is lower. You’re more probably a smoker, use illegal drugs, engage in risky sexual behavior, have been a victim of crime, and have been incarcerated for committing crime yourself.

That is exactly right. A different judgment would probably be made about someone with a tattoo who had previous military experience. But it still would not be considered acceptable if it were visible in business attire.

I have been told that among officers, the practice of getting tattoos is highly discouraged.

Maybe he’s talking about a discrete mathematics tattoo? A statistics freak?

A tattoo that is neither discrete nor discreet:

Maybe a small tattoo with this on your hip would be both:

Click,cluck old hen.

I’m too busy building things to worry about tearing down people whose hair color I don’t approve of.

You’re obviously not.

Frankly, I find the stereotyping of everone with a tatoo bordering on racist thinking.

And I find your "tolerant" attitude hypocritical since you are being judgmental or those of us who think getting a tattoo is the epitome of stupidity.

It is the stupidest fad since pet rocks. Only you can bury your pet rock when the fad dies out. You're stuck with that stupid tattoo until they cremate your corpse. It forever tells the world what a self absorbed moron lies under your skin.

I would never offer my valuable skills to a fearful old Biddy who can’t see past their prejudices.

You clearly don’t know half what you think you do about people, or their tattoos.

Tattoos and piercings are anti-Biblical.

“I’m too busy building things”

No....you are posting on FR, demanding people not have a opinion of you based on your body art.

So in essence, you are really just building strawmen.

And as I suspected, you most certainly judge people on their appearance, and realize that you sound like a total hypocrite when expecting no one does the same for you.

As many comments have observed, tattoos are more common and more admired by younger people

Well for most part, the younger people aren't the ones doing the hiring.

Oh, well that says a lot more about you than my tattoo will ever tell you about me.

Seriously, who has time to waste on this?

If the person rolled the sleeve down, it would be discreet.

Depends on the business, and what you mean by “younger.” There are plenty of people in their 30s in management positions.

As for the teens getting tattoos I feel this is something they do to get attention and it comes from insecurity.

It used to be you got tats to stand out, now you get them to fit in.

And it’s not just tattoos. I have encountered an increasing number with so-called body modifications such as split tongue, bump on the head, etc.

Maybe, but I don’t see why that would change one correctly-spelled word into another correctly-spelled (but incorrectly-used) word.

I think it’s hilarious when the old curmudgeons around here get all judgmental..

I’ve got tattoos, and they don’t seem to be causing me any problems with work or with morality, or with socialization.”””

Hey, sunshine-—Those ‘old curmudgeons are the ones who hire, fire 7 sign the FRONT of the paychecks. You might always be good at signing the BACK of your paycheck-—but not the FRONT.
