It’s Chicago, so there must be some law about the AR15. Irrespective of there being an actual crime committed (other than the traffic violation), it makes no sense to me that they have already dismissed the possibility of terrorism.
They’ll drop this like a hot rock. AR rifles are perfectly legal in Illinois. So is the handgun. If he wasn’t walking around inside the terminal no laws were broken.

Likely they were muslims and screaming Ala Snackbar when they were pullede over- so of course there would have been ‘no obvious signs of terrorism’
Cook county and Chicago. I believe state law may allow transportation through the city/County, but then he wasn't passing through, rather to a destination. Then there's his lack of an FOID, a state violation, felony for the handgun. He can argue he was passing through under federal law, but he clearly had a destination. Most Wisconsin gunowners know this.
And then there's the dirty pressure cooker.
