More than half of Americans dont think Donald Trump is fit to serve as president, yet he has a clear path to winning reelection. If Trump isnt removed from office and doesnt lead the country into some form of global catastrophe, he could secure a second term simply by maintaining his current level of support with his political base.
We have entered a new era in American politics. The 2016 election exposed how economic, social and cultural issues have splintered the country and increasingly divided voters by age, race, education and geography. This isnt going to change.
What have changed are the political fault lines that have driven the debate since the early 1980s. Until now, the ideological divides between the parties were largely differences around social issues, defense spending and trade, as well as tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations. Today, the central issue has become populism as voters have moved away from the two political parties and increasingly self-identified as independents....

“What Happened AGAIN!!” is being ghost written now by well paid, well hidden pantsuit wearing minions.
Especially if the Hillary runs again. Her future book, What Happened, the Sequel.
If we were he, we’d be checking our statistics before making such a blatantly false statement.
“More than half of Americans dont think Donald Trump is fit to serve”
Only so long as he builds the wall, deports illegal aliens, and defends the 2nd amendment. Otherwise...
Heh ... “news.”
Heh, suck it WaPo. LOL.
It gets old, eh?
I can't imagine the voters that switched to TRUMP in MI, WI & PA would want to vote for a Socialist! LOL
Well, since all the democrats have to challenge him are piles of dog shit then he’ll easily win reelection.
The wall is already underway, illegals are being deported every day and he’s not about to do anything to the 2nd Amendment.
4% growth will seal it. Throw in the fence and another SCOTUS. Norks could screw him unless it’s done right. Cuba, Venezuela could blow up in our favor.
He’s got it wrapped.
If the secular left keeps falling into itty bitty pieces over Donald he will have it made in the shade, electorally speaking. He is the fellow daring to speak the politically unspeakable.
The only kind of left that could trump Trump would be a literally born again left that makes a convincing gospel case, beating Donald down the very road he has embarked upon.
OK so he’s got it. You mean the rats won’t try something really OUT there? They won’t take it sitting down. I for one think they should be ridiculed every step of the way.
The Norkie threat could go down ugly but still rotsa ruck to anyone who says afterwards that they want it back!
“Trumps support from these voters is personal, not ideological. That explains their willingness to stick with him despite his failures of leadership.”
Let them keep thinking that...as long as Trump doesn’t think the same, we’re fine.
As myself and many have noted, it was ISSUES and only ISSUES that sent Trump to the White House. In fact, most of us looked at Trump as more of a clown before he announced - and we had 16 candidates, most very well qualified for the top job.
But what Trump did was speak TRUTH to politicians. He said there were ‘bad people’ streaming through our southern border and we need a wall to stop it...and every other Republican had a choice to make, which went as follows:
They could say:
1) “Trump is full of Shiite and can go to hell. A wall sends the wrong message to our friends to the South.”
- or -
2) “Trump is a bit colorful in his words, but we sure as heck do have a major problem on our southern border and a wall would go a long way towards fixing that problem.”
OBVIOUSLY they chose #1, and thus handed Trump the nomination and then the White House. Had any of them tried actually riding his coattails (i.e., #2), and with reasonable credibility, Trump probably would have lost the nomination.
And if I were you, I would pat myself on the back for using the subjunctive! ;-)
...but to this guy’s credit, he is ‘getting it’ regarding how to win if you’re a Republican, with the key thing being to NOT PISS OFF YOUR BASE, as Bush Sr. did over and over (and Bush Jr. did, although a bit less).
You feed the base by keeping your promises, and then you reach out and try to grab more of the middle. Lots of ways to do that as a Republican...but most are too gun-shy (or too stupid) to actually do just that. Example: Asians have now reached 50% of the black population (i.e., their numbers exploded while no one was watching). What is their primary concern? Education of their kids. How do Asians vote? About 70% Democrat. Which party is MAKING SURE that Asian kids are prevented from going to the top schools, in order to make room for blacks and Hispanics? The Democrats. Do Republicans point this out? Nope.
By going sincerely even a little ways down the Christian path, Donald gets an advantage. The devil can be counted on to be shallow, if intense. The big question is, where are “we the people”?
“Trump cannot win a two-person race this way (with his low approval numbers). But he can prevail in a field with strong independent candidates on the ballot.”
...tell that to Hillary. I’m surprised he misses the key factors of voter intensity and which states pretty much are responsible for Trump having his low approval (i.e., California and New York, for starters)...states that Trump can never win, no matter what - but also doesn’t need.
