Las Vegas Strip shooter prescribed anti-anxiety drug in June

Stephen Paddock, who killed at least 58 people and wounded hundreds more in Las Vegas on Sunday with high-powered rifles, was prescribed an anti-anxiety drug in June that can lead to aggressive behavior, the Las Vegas Review-Journal has learned...

Records from the Nevada Prescription Monitoring Program obtained Tuesday show Paddock was prescribed 50 10-milligram diazepam tablets by Henderson physician Dr. Steven Winkler on June 21. A woman who answered the phone at Winkler’s office would not make him available to answer questions and would neither confirm nor deny that Paddock was ever a patient.

Paddock purchased the drug — its brand name is Valium — without insurance at a Walgreens store in Reno on the same day it was prescribed. He was supposed to take one pill a day.

Diazepam is a sedative-hypnotic drug in the class of drugs known as benzodizepines, which studies have shown can trigger aggressive behavior. Chronic use or abuse of sedatives such as diazepam can also trigger psychotic experiences, according to drugabuse.com...

...A 2015 study published in World Psychiatry of 960 Finnish adults and teens convicted of homicide showed that their odds of killing were 45 percent higher during time periods when they were on benzodiazepines. A year earlier, the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry published a study titled, “Benzodiazepine Use and Aggressive Behavior.” The authors wrote: “It appears that benzodiazepine use is moderately associated with subsequent aggressive behavior.”

Dr. Michael First, a clinical psychiatry professor at Columbia University and expert on benzodiazepines, said the Finnish study speaks for itself. But he also told the Review-Journal on Tuesday that he believes the drugs would be more likely to fuel impulsive aggression than premeditated behavior...

...The Nevada state monitoring report also noted that Winkler prescribed 50 10-milligram tablets of diazepam to Paddock in 2016...

Dr Winkler had better be prepared for about 550 lawsuits.

Why? The doctor is not responsible for his patients’ actions. Nor is anybody else.

Valium did not cause this.

I thought maybe this was the case.

There is a significant possible issue with these drugs, they are vastly over-prescribed, in my view, for exactly this reason.

In my view anyway.

They’re going to try to cover this up fast.

I have a feeling this guy was an FBI operative selling guns in lieu of a bust. That’s the only reason why he rented two rooms - the suite for the buyers and the adjoining room for himself. There’s no reason for him to have 20+ guns up there unless he was selling them. The buyers caught wind, killed him, shot up the concert, and scrambled out the back when the police locked down the strip. The police had so much mayhem to deal with, it took them forever to get to the room. 25 seconds down a elevator and boom, gone.

This probably is the FBI’s fault.

1Omg diazapam (i.e. Valium)... 10mg is light. Larger doses can cause delutions, and suicidal tendencies.

Protocol... take 2 aspirin and call me in the morning strength of protocol. What this whackjob needed was a healthy dose of fentanyl.

Full scale psychopath? Perhaps.

Millions of people are on valium. They should all be investigated?

Looking more and more like a Trump hater with mental issues that went off the deep end.

Sadly, given the extreme hate fed by the media and establishment, there are likely many others like him walking around.

Well of course.... It was that anti-anxiety drug that killed those poor people, or the guns, or maybe just maybe it was the dude who pulled the trigger.

There are no excuses for inanity, no motives, no reasoning, it just happened because the cheese slid off this dudes cracker. Plain, simple and totally unacceptable for those searching in vain for answers... But the truth hurts.

I thought that the doc of the Sandy Hook killer knew of his murderous impulses but kept them to herself because of doctor patient privilege?

But apparently I have that shooting mistaken with another. Anyone recall which shooter’s doctor became aware of plans days to a week out?

Also read this about Sandy Hook

https://www.nytimes.com/2014/11/22/nyregion/before-newtown-shootings-adam-lanzas-mental-problems-completely-untreated-report-says.html

(no prescription meds in the Sandy Hook case and big pharma was pushing for them to make people pass for normal)

Peter Hitchens has written extensively on drug use, prescription drug use etc. etc. in those who commit mass murder.

Its amazing how the dots connect but I guess what we’re trying to figure out is if the drugs aggravate the craziness already there.

Its the insanity of the perps themselves that probably causes them to seek scripts from doctors for all the medical ailments that afflict their tortured souls.

The number of guns is the message.

I think Stephen had a best bud killed by one of our guns in the Fast & Furious operation. Just sticks in my head.

Paddock bought 50 guns...one at a time.......all legally. 33 were bought in the last 12 months.

All have been tracked at this time.

If you buy two or more at a time...it has to be reported.

I can see where we need a "multiple purchase" flag. Is that what he's trying to tell us?

What was the criteria for Fast & Furious?

Re: 7

Really? He lugged what appear to have been 20 or so middle of the road long guns up to the 32nd floor of a hotel to sell?

Brought them all up to his room to sell?

So the. users would have to be bring them all back down to the 1st Floor?

Operational Jihadists are well known users of anti-anxiety meds, either by choice, or forced to take.

Zolam is a favorite brand among the ME suicide bombers.

The guy was retired......ban retirees. The guy was an accountant, ban accountants. The guy was white, ban white men. The guy was not married, ban unwed people. The guy didn’t have children, ban non-parents.

I’ve lived a quiet life and have never been in a fancy suite like that, but I have been in hotels all over the world. Any of the really nice hotels I stayed in always had someone freshening up the room, even when I didn’t ask them to do anything or told them not to. They protect their investment. The fallout of this will be interesting.
