An engineering student who was an LGBTQ activist was shot and killed by Georgia Tech campus police on Saturday night, officials said Sunday.
The school identified the victim as Scout Schultz, 21, a fourth-year engineering student from Lilburn, Georgia, who police said was armed with a knife. Schultz, president of Georgia Tech's Pride Alliance, identified as non-binary and intersex and preferred to be referred to with they/them gender pronouns, according to the alliance's website.
At a news conference Monday, Schultz's family's attorney said the student was experiencing a "mental breakdown" on the night of the shooting.

With regard to a knife wielding person and the time for the distance between the perp and the intended victim - the incident one year ago in the shopping mall in St. Cloud Minnesota is a good case to study.
Perhaps readers will recall the situation when the Muslim deranged man began stabbing people willy-nilly and running around yelling at them. A man in the mall who was an off duty police officer had his gun with him. He had a concealed carry permit. When the perp entered Macy’s department store he charged at the officer who warned him that he had a gun. The man continued unabated and was shot one, two, three and finally about five or six times before he stopped his attacking behavior and slumped to the floor and died. When questioned, the officer stated that he kept telling the perp to stop, but with no avail. An idiotic reported asked him why he had to shoot so many times. The officer stated that his purpose was to stop the attack and it was inevitable at that point that the man was shot in the head.
So, in answer to how and why an officer would finally shoot to kill a knife-wielding person, the most likely answer is - it was the only way to halt the attack.
May God bless you.....tough job.....and even tougher decisions to make.
Thanks, very decent of you.
an LGBTQ activist was shot and killed by Georgia Tech campus police on Saturday night... Scout Schultz, 21, a fourth-year engineering student... was armed with a knife... identified as non-binary and intersex and preferred to be referred to with they/them gender pronouns... Schultz's family's attorney said the student was experiencing a "mental breakdown" on the night of the shooting. He's cured, it's a miracle.
There are two environments that mentally ill people probably shouldn’t hang out or get themselves into: military and college. Between the stress, back-stage theatrics, and day-to-day pressure...neither would be helpful to this kind of person.
In this episode, cops report the kid as alcohol-driven. It’ll be a month before the medical report draws real conclusions. My suspicion is that for some reason, he went off and consumed a lot of booze and got himself into a student-to-cop confrontation. I’m not quiet buying into the mental breakdown thing yet. If just consuming a lot of booze qualifies for a mental breakdown....then we have five or six million people nightly who do this.
Something else that I hope folks will consider.
Every step backward you take as a police officer facing an armed and/or deranged individual is emboldening them, putting you in a situation where you may trip or back up against something, giving them the opportunity to rush you, OR puts an innocent in the attack radius of the offender.
At some point you have to draw the bright red line and go back no further.
As far those advocating for the LESS lethal response of a TASER, well TASER works very well WHEN it works.
When you miss with one or both barbs, or they fail to penetrate the clothing to the skin, you are in big trouble if you dealing with someone with a weapon. The vast majority of TASER cartridges are 21 foot deployment length (with optimal range between 6 and 15 feet). If you have a failure, and need to transition to a firearm these things have to happen first.
You need to mentally acknowledge the failure.
You need to override the training to reach for the second cartridge underneath. (You won’t have time)
You need to drop the TASER.
You need to drop your hand to your holster and unholster your duty weapon, overcoming all retention devices while dealing with the loss of fine motor control.
Draw your weapon and present it while trying to deal with the tunnel vision which hampers your ability to see stuff beyond the target you don’t want to hit.
You must be able to hit the target who is undoubtedly moving at a rapid pace toward you, especially since you have “attacked” them.
This is why you don’t use a TASER in a lethal force situation. There’s just not enough time and certainty.
Klinefelter syndrome (47,XXY or just XXY) No it is not a 4th gender. Doctors and Scientist consider those with this genetic anomaly to be male.
They played the video of this on ATLANTA TV station last night. They were telling, basically begging the guy to halt, to stop advancing. At one point they asked him his name two or three times especially, told him this was not necessary, to put down the knife or whatever he had. His response was
“ well, shoot me, “ he said that multiple times and continued to advance towards them.
#3. You left one out - Bi-o-Degradable.
We also need to keep in mind that he called in to 911 describing a male with a knife AND a gun, thus upping the ante.
Good for the police. They finally put this poor boys confusion to rest.
To #9. No-binary means a star that is by itself as opposed to having another circling around it/each other (Binary star).
Re “intersex”. That’s where streets come together. Drive carefully.
Now, if you ask me what a “binary, bisexual, intersection” is, I don’t know, but drive very carefully when you come to one.
Opened metal bodied multi-tool. Even without the knife blade out, it can look like a knife.
“...they may very well shoot you if you are acting crazy and have any sort of weapon.”
Ya think?
“....preferred to be referred to with they/them gender pronouns....”
They’re dead, Jim....
I read an article about justified police shootings that stated over 75 percent of officers in that situation quit the job within 3 years.
I read an article about justified police shootings that stated over 75 percent of officers in that situation quit the job within 3 years.
That is probably on the mark. Think about this. Of all the officers that were in shootings that made the national news, how many are still police officers, even if they were cleared.
I can’t think of any.
Then there is this, and this is only one story.
We are not replacing our officers in the numbers that are leaving. This is a nationwide phenomenon. Everyone I work with, including me, tells anyone considering a law enforcement career to look elsewhere.
So now instead of plainew male + female = kids, with 62 new perversions we now have 64×64 possible combinations (4096), but what exactly will be the product of such unions?
Satan is the author of all confusion & perversions and has always been attacking God's foundations of society: the family.
