Police in the US state of Georgia have shot and killed an LGBT student activist, leading to an independent investigation. Police encountered Scout Schultz at a campus in Atlanta after a call about "a person with a knife and a gun" late on Saturday, officials say. Footage has emerged apparently showing Schultz, 21, refusing to obey multiple police commands to drop a knife. Schultz's mother said police should not have used lethal force. In a video filmed by fellow students at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Schultz is heard saying "Shoot me!" while continuing to advance on the officers. One of them then opens fire. Schultz - who identified as neither male nor female - did not appear to be holding a gun, investigators said, despite what was initially reported to police.
The computer engineering student later died in hospital, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said. No police officers from the Georgia Tech Police Department (GTPD) were injured in the incident. The officer who opened fire has not been named. Schultz's mother Lynne later said Scout, who was born Scott Schultz, was politically active in progressive causes, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. She added that Schultz had numerous medical issues, suffered from depression and had attempted suicide two years ago. "Why didn't they use some nonlethal force, like pepper spray or Tasers?" she was quoted as saying by the newspaper. Schultz was the president of the Pride Alliance at Georgia Tech. "We are all deeply saddened by what has occurred," the group said in a statement. "They have been the driving force behind Pride Alliance for the past two years," the group said, using Schultz's preferred pronoun. "They pushed us to do more events and a larger variety events."

I’ve never faced a them with a knife, but Massad Ayoob and others have written that if a they brandishing a knife and advancing on you, as here, gets within 12 feet (the figure I recall) of you, then they’re too close and you should start shooting.

As far as I know, they all carry pepper spray. A lot also carry a taser.
Both could have been used easily to stop him but yes this will go down as justified even if it really wasn’t.

I’m not going to read the whole piece, I just know what I have been taught in several firearms classes. An assailant can cover 5 or 6 yards pretty quickly.
The man was seriously mentally ill. The family and friends should be asked just what efforts they made to help him. Other than enabling his delusions, I mean. I know first hand it is very difficult to deal with a mentally ill relative or friend. It’s also very easy to place blame on others for not doing any better.
Lady, it’s really fuc*ing simple. When a cop gives you a commmamd, you FOLLOW IT. If you don’t, you ffa e the use of lethal force. That’s the beginning and end of the discussion. There’s no ifs, ands, or buts. Your kid did something stupid and he got dead as a result.

There are not many situations where it would be proper to shoot someone in the foot. This very well may have been one of those.

I have shot lots of rattlesnakes through the head with a .22 pistol or larger caliber. It is not that hard to do but is way more difficult than shooting a foot moving slowly.

Aren’t people taught any more that not following the directions of the police is an invitation for trouble? Whenever my mom was pulled over for speeding when we were kids, she’d curse them out privately, but after rolling down the window was all softness and compliance.
