LOOK: Stadium is half-empty for Colts-Rams regular season opener in Los Angeles
CBS Sports ^ | Sept 13, 2017 | John Breech

If NFL fans in Los Angeles are excited about the Rams this year, they have a funny way of showing it. The L.A. Coliseum looked nearly empty for the team's home opener against the Colts on Sunday, and let's just say that everyone watching at home seemed to notice.

When the game kicked off, former Colts punter Pat McAfee was one of the first people to point out how empty the stadium looked.

Not even the lure of a $6 ticket was enough to get Rams fans to the game. That's right, all you needed was six dollars to attend Sunday's game, and even that wasn't enough to get fans through the doors...

Was the stadium really that empty, or was it just a long tv timeout and everyone went to the concession stands and restrooms?

Who’s Americas’ Team?

Cowboys = top draw: 93,183.

...(I’m disappointed the link didn’t go hyper, but don’t know how to fix it. Just check it out anyway.)

Yeah, that was my first thought, too. How many times does the NFL have to get run out of LA before they finally figure out that their product isn’t selling there?

But the money boys want to have a team to play with while they sit on the West Coast.

Moving the Rams out of St Louis was stupid. They had a solid (if small market) fan base. They lost all of that now for a shiny new stadium that will set empty. Paid for by the tax payers of course.

Maybe they should require All team members to sit and protest during the National Anthem, hell line the field with American Flags and light them on fire. That should help attendance.

Correct! That’s where the final death match will happen for the NFL, when USA-loving fans are asked to spend their tax money on a new stadium.

I thought Green Bay drew from Milwaukee? (When did they stop playing 1/2 their home games there?) It's similar to Buffalo, which is in reality Toronto's NFL team.

But - trying not to sound like a snob here - California does offer a lot of options. There's a reason so many people moved here: it's a very active state, especially early in the morning when there's tons of people out riding bikes, jogging, walking, etc. Visitors always seem to remark how busy it is early.

The thought of driving to downtown LA to watch the Rams when it's really nice outside just doesn't compute with most. That's why LA (and "SF" now that they're down in Santa Clara) will only support a winner. Not because they're band wagon fans, but rather, there's so many other things to do.

Green Bay, like SF used to be, has weather/culture more suited for the social aspects of football. When the 9ers played at Candlestick, it was much cooler and felt much more like fall.

Throw in the political aspects, and my own theory (the NFL has destroyed the game through constant commercial/penalty review interruption), and we see the result. However, perhaps the most interesting trend is the growing active FU boycott. That is, agnostics like me can even feel the impulse to jump on board to make our general malaise & boredom wit the game more of a political statement just for the hell of it.

On MLB ... that strike was 23 years ago. Most of today’s players were not yet born or still in diapers when that strike happened. If THESE players pull that crap, then it’s over. But until they do, I am going to enjoy MLB. It is one of the few escapes from political insanity left. (I mute ESPN). Continuing your boycott makes as much sense as the blacks today grieving about slavery 200 years ago. That was then, this us now.

The record for a Texas High School game was 54,347 in 2013. In 2014 the top game drew only 52,308. (Allen played in both of those games at Jerryworld. Their home stadium only seats 18,000)

In 2016, Temple v. Highland Park outdrew 3 college bowl games.

In my lifetime, Los Angeles has lost THREE football teams. Ya think maybe it’s not a football town?

Obvious answer: Mexicans prefer soccer.

But LA got two teams this fall , the Rams and the Chargers. Wait until you see the 27,000 seat soccer stadium this Sunday. As of yesterday it is not sold out. Smart move by a stupid owner.
The NFL let someone else control their brand. Not a winning approach to continued financial success. NFL is on the down slope.
