ESPN head to staff: ESPN is not a political organization
ESPN's chief is defending the network after intense backlash this week, including a stream of White House criticism over anchor Jemele Hill calling President Trump a "white supremacist."
"We have issues of significant debate in our country at this time," ESPN president John Skipper wrote in a memo to staff on Friday reported by multiple media outlets.
"In light of recent events, we need to remind ourselves that we are a journalistic organization and that we should not do anything that undermines that position," he continued, noting, "ESPN is about sports."
"ESPN is not a political organization. Where sports and politics intersect, no one is told what view they must express," he said.
"At the same time, ESPN has values," Skipper continued, writing ESPN is "committed to inclusion and an environment of tolerance where everyone in a diverse work force has the equal opportunity to succeed."

Talk about your wretched elitist leftists...
One of the finest posts I have seen on FR in about 20 years. Well said, and the tone is spot-on.
Not to mention Rush Limbaugh and others.........
Yeah, right. "We're not political, unlike you racist White Supremacist Trump voter Nazis who disagree with us." Never underestimate the power of the Off button.
Sports Illustrated has become the same thing as ESPN. Liberal writers constantly spewing their one-sided propaganda on the SI.com website. And they no longer have a “Comments” section on their articles, where you could point out their bias.
When you allow a racist to spew racist hatred of America and our president on your network, then it’s definitely NOT about sports anymore.
Nice try, (fake news) ESPN.
....guess someone got hit in the azz with bottom line....viewership
All I can add to your great post is:
If I were an employee, I would look elsewhere to escape the madness.
Of course you are political. That’s why you’re on my tagline list. BTW, I’ve just added the long deserving Hollywood.
Yeah - all inclusive if one doesn’t have a conservative view expressed. ESPN and the NFL may deteriorate hand-in-hand...
Funny, I thought it was a sports network. It obviously needs to change its name to "ITDEO Network". Maybe THAT will bring in some viewers.
It’s laughable...
Coulda fooled me, too.
If he is just now putting out such a memo, he should be gone. Together with Ms. Hill. ESPN has been political for years, nothing ‘journalistic’ about it.
Couldn’t make me watch that network...cut cable anyway.
What a lie.
He should have said, where sports and politics intersect, stick with sports.
Don’t turn off ESPN, that is punishing yourself for THEIR failures. Just MUTE it. You don’t need all the “blather” and “fill in commentary” anyway. Ask Alexa to turn on your favorite Pandora station, make sure your Kindle is charged so you can read your way through the commercials. It makes for a most pleasant sports experience. It the only way to watch sports.
Unfortunately, blocking them does not deny them your money. You buy a cable package or sat package that includes them, they get a percentage.
The problem is that they are in the sports entertainment delivery system and they think they are “journalists.” With that vile profession comes all sorts of leftist baggage. They think they are responsible in guiding your thinking.
They think that they “know” the “truth” because they have “studied” it in doing their job. Since they know the truth, they care more and should be allowed to plan outcomes.
Ratings are in free fall and subscribers are leaving.
...Where sports and politics intersect,....
Those two never intersect. I tune in to ESPN to watch sports, not a clone of fake news CNN
“At the same time, ESPN has values,” ... “committed to inclusion and an environment of tolerance where everyone in a diverse work force has the equal opportunity to succeed.”
Except for white folks...
Too late!
