SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (Reuters) - Saddled with economic problems and its own damage from Hurricane Irma, Puerto Rico is taking thousands of refugees from the U.S. Virgin Islands whose homes were destroyed by the storm, with a cruise ship carrying up to 2,000 more due to set sail for the U.S. territory on Wednesday.
Visibly shaken residents from St. Martin and the Virgin Islands arrived on Tuesday on U.S. military aircraft, bringing tales of terrifying winds and a breakdown of law and order.
"The people of Puerto Rico - what big hearts you guys got because our (local) government did nothing - nothing," said William Vonfabrice, 61, from St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands. "People coming at us with machetes, offering bullets and saying 'There is more for you,' breaking into houses, hurting people."
Royal Caribbean's Majesty of the Seas cruise ship was expected to depart the badly damaged St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, on Wednesday evening bound for San Juan, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands commissioner of tourism Beverly Nicholson-Doty said.
Irma skirted Puerto Rico last week, knocking out power to 70 percent of the island, damaging buildings and killing at least three people, but the destruction was not nearly as bad as elsewhere in the Caribbean.

Irma Caribbean follow up ping. Let me know if you want on/off. Regards.
As long as they know that doesn’t mean they have made it “into the USA”. That shouldn’t be a backdoor into green card status.
Allowing a luxury cruise ship to dock at your port is “helping” refugees?
Puerto Ricans, who are U.S. citizens, are taking in refugees from the U.S. Virgin Islands, who are U.S. citizens. No green cards required.
They are US citizens helping other US citizens. They could all come to the mainland and move in to your neighborhood...no visa or green card required.
And offering our boats, our homes, our food, our cars, our cell phones...is there no end to your cynicism?
Now THESE are refugees I could get behind!
So then why talk about the cruise ships at all?
They literally dock in San Juan on a daily basis in normal times.
Now we are going to never get rid of them and they will get welfare. Why didn’t the Dutch or French rescue them?
Because the cruise lines are using their ships not to offer vacations to the refugees, but to pick them up at the Virgins and then DROPPING THEM OFF IN PUERTO RICO, where thousands of volunteers from our communities in and around San Juan are pouring out to help them with what little we have, and even if we got hit ourselves.
.
Puerto Rico is, of course, the HQ of the Federal Reserve, dedicated to the over-running of the US by the rest of the world.
So surprising!
.
These are mostly American citizens residents of the islands who lost EVERYTHING, and need a place to crash and eat while they figure what to do about their homes. The citizens from non-U.S. islands are here IN TRANSIT or on their way to Europe - France or the Netherlands.

‘Cept for that ocean that was in their way...

When you offer what little you have to others who have less, is what kindheartedness and being good humans is all about.
You must be one of those few Jews who brainlessly support the neoNazis.
I’m not going to call you a racist, because the people in the Caribbean are of multiple races, but you are a
BIGOT.
Don’t you have a neoNazi demonstration which you need to attend?
This is really very touching to know that Puerto Rico is taking in the folks from the battered and shattered islands. Thanks for the ping.
Oh I understand thanks!!!!!
St Martin isn’t USA. And ill bet anything that list isn’t fully inclusive. Guaranteed they’ll scour all around.
