Wonder why New York property taxes are sky-high, particularly in the Long Island and Lower Hudson Valley suburbs around the city? The Empire Centers latest analysis flags one key reason: the astounding pay doled out to government workers in those areas especially uniformed services, like police and firefighters.
For the second year in a row, the center found, 47 of the top 50 highest-paid local-government workers outside New York City were police officers with five of the top seven on the Town of Ramapo payroll.
The No. 1 earner, Ramapo Police Officer Thomas Donnelly, pulled in $441,968 in the year ending last March. Four other Rockland County cops joined him in the top 10.

Obviously he works a lot of overtime. Figure out what that is in dollars per hour. His pension will be enormous, even better than odumbo’s.
No, it won’t happen here. Which is part of the reason taxpayers, jobs, and House seats continue to leave NYS. They can make us pay, but they can’t make us STAY.

All done to hire “the most qualified”. And, having been one, in the South where they don’t make anything, there is some truth to that. Cops, especially, have to make a split second decision, retell the story in the form of a report and in court, where they get picked apart by a defense attorney.
Do you want some kid that barely made it thru high school on the witness stand that has no idea what the $10 words mean? I’ve been subject to it. And when the defense attorney’s realize that you can speak their language, they back off real quick if the case is decent.
But, there’s a lot of competition to hire the “right” people, so departments offer more and more. It’s nothing for 80,000 people to sign up for the Suffolk County, NY police test for 150 positions.
On the flip side, millennials DO NOT WANT TO BECOME COPS, FIREMEN OR EMTs, no matter how much you pay them. Whether it’s due to selfishness, being a p*ssy, or hating the police, they aren’t going into the field and lots of people are retiring.
Half the cops from the Northeast, Northern Midwest(Chicago, etc) and the West Coast and maybe a few in Florida.
Fixed it.
The rest of us, don’t get it like that. Hell, Dallas’ police pension is about to collapse, as are many others
Don’t forget the generous annual pay increases doled out by spineless government officials, all the way down to the town level. Police, fire and school employees (don’t buy the myth about underpaid teachers, after all the work done by their unions) are paid well and better each year.
Soon there will be ONE cop, ONE firefighter and ONE teacher in each small town, and property taxes will soar to pay the wages.

Your formula is too modest. Many regular civil servants have a formula capped around 70 to 75 percent. But police and fire are capped around 95 percent.
And for regular civil servants they might get 2 percent times years of service, capped at 70 percent of salary. While police and fire get 3 percent (or more) times years of service, capped at 95 percent of salary. Additionally, regular civil servants have to wait until age 60 (or later) to obtain full formula percentage (of 2 percent times years), any lesser age over 50 they get a penalty fractional calculation done and obtain a smaller pension (and not based on overtime). But police and fire are allowed to retire at 50 with full calculation and no penalty on pension. Many get pensions far in excess of their regular salary, pay for not working as a retiree. Police and fire unions are very powerful groups that sway city hall into giving perks, all in the guise of public safety.
A couple sergeants I know had a sweet deal, doing overtime at the baseball park while the Giants played. Easy gig, extra money. They retired with a big smile (and big pension). They were the friendliest cops I knew, probably because of their relatively stress-free jobs.

This is the dirty secret of OT. UsuallyOT is granted to the highest in seniority first. Ofcourse at time and half. Sop if the cop is making $50 an hour OT is $75.
BUT if the force would hire extra cops they could not pay Stand just move cops around. So that the extra cop who is new may make 25 and hour and $7 in benefits for 32 a savings of $43 and hour over paying the senior most cop time and half.
In our department we knew a lot of COs called in sick on Friday Saturday and Sunday, we could have hire a bunch if part-timers or newbies to cover those shifts and save a lot of money (the Deprt of Corrections in cal has the same heavy spending for OT as Pos, maybe more). But they were reluctant to hire the new employees to save the money.
Worse yet, NYS fines individuals for moving out of the state. I don’t have the rates offhand.
