The entire Florida Peninsula has begun to experience Hurricane Irma following landfall at Marco Island. Thousands of Floridians who evacuated the Atlantic cost to Gulf Coast areas found their safe shelter under direct threat from Hurricane Irma as the forecast shifted W Friday night and Saturday. Prayers for all in the storm path.

It’s beautiful. If you ever find yourself in the vicinity, especially in spring or fall, it’s worth a side trip for a couple of days, definitely. Very historic, going back to the 1600’s before there was a North and South Carolina. Only far northeastern NC had earlier European settlement, but given the treacherous nature of the sea and sounds there, no major port cities developed until Wilmington at the mouth of the Cape Fear River, which was more early 1700’s. Beautiful place too, Wilmington. Different personality from Charleston, though. Some parts of Charleston could be on Barbados, as far as the looks of the place.
I'm not surprised. And it only works if ya got a wifi connection. Better than nothing, but agree, it's certainly not as good, informative, stand alone independent or as reliable as radio.
Without question. Florida is very lucky it was not a direct hit on Miami at a Cat 4 or 5..
Still a lot of weather left with Irma's remnants.
Real devastating beyond the hype storm
Or one I experienced a few miles inland as an 11 year old boy
I have work in Mt. Pleasant from time to time. It’s a nice place. I try to stay near Patriots Point.
The College of Charleston is a big customer as well and the best about those jobs is the food.
I have been on pins and needles. I have a vacation coming up on Hatteras in 12 days. Seeing one storm after another was getting to me.
Have you watched the movie with the Adam12 guy Martin Milner?
You are fixated on wind. Water causes far more deaths and damage. Sandy wasn’t even technically a hurricane at landfall and caused over sixty billion in damage. As the saying goes in Texas, the wind will scare you but the water will kill you.
That is worthy of a frame.
Look on the bright side, the shelling will be awesome and so will be the surf. Fishing is also great in the wake of a storm. A good blow clears the air, really brilliant blue skies. Unless, of course, another one comes along right in behind. But, José appears headed far up the coast into south Jersey. You’ll have windier conditions than usual and a very impressive swell. Hopefully the wind isn’t up so much that blowing sand stings your legs but that rarely lasts more than a day or two.
A - Mississipi
B - Alabama
C - Virginia.
Correct answer - C, Virginia. From flooding long after Camille was no longer a hurricane.
It’s always like that people evacuate. It’s a gamble because some will have no idea when they can go back home and it won’t be their decision to make.
Not very many disasters would make me evacuate and I would assess it very carefully if time were available. With earthquake events, evacuating prior to an event is not even a strategy because of no warning.
Thanks. I’m bringing at least 14 with me.
I will be out fishing the surf and just having fun.
No rules for anybody.
Jose should be out of the picture by then, hopefully not thru Hatteras. But we could see other storms, lots of waves marching across Africa.
I also expect an Indian Summer to kick up.
I think it will be warm and I expect most of the activity to die out for this time.
I forget the name of the storm but a group of friends and I rented a house out on Ocracoke at the end of October, they have a Halloween parade, originally just for the school kids right through the middle of the village, that has gradually morphed into an event. The ferry ride out from Swan Quarter sounded rough, rocking and rolling but not bad enough that service was shut down. Heard about it second hand because we got a late start and couldn’t make the last one of the day, so we took 64 into Nags Head and drove down the length of Hatteras. There were boats alongside the road but far more campers destroyed. Many sections still had sand all over them, blowing sand by that point which made visibility rather poor driving at night. Then, we got to Mirlo Beach which was really nailed with a new inlet cut, Highway 12 was wiped out. They’d put up a temporary steel plate one lane bridge and rebuilt the dune line with bulldozers right beside the road. That was an interesting drive. Ocracoke was unaffected as far as we could tell. A little chilly for late October there, but our place was in the village overlooking the harbor, we weren’t planning on going swimming or spending much time on the beach anyway. It was fun. We’ve meant to go back and do it again but life gets in the way.
