After Siding With Dems, Trump Responds to GOP Criticism With a Reminder
Townhall.com ^ | September 8, 2017 | Courtney O'Brian

Republicans on Capitol Hill are surprised and "confounded" that the leader of their party, President Trump, sided with top Democrats in the debt ceiling debate this week, hiking it for three months.

He even earned a bit of rare praise from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

Then, Trump twisted the knife even further by taking the advice of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi in regards to DACA. At her urging, the president tweeted out a rather compassionate message for illegal immigrants who currently benefit from the program. They don't have to worry during the six-month delay, Trump told them.

What gives, the GOP wondered.

Trump, hearing the criticism, immediately pounced on the opportunity to send this reminder.

Republicans, sorry, but I've been hearing about Repeal & Replace for 7 years, didn't happen! Even worse, the Senate Filibuster Rule will....— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 8, 2017

...never allow the Republicans to pass even great legislation. 8 Dems control - will rarely get 60 (vs. 51) votes. It is a Repub Death Wish!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 8, 2017

In other words (those that can't fit in a tweet), if Republicans failed so miserably in regards to health care - something they've been screaming about for seven years - how can they be trusted to enact meaningful tax reform and rein in our debt?

A few Republican leaders, who although admit they were taken aback by Trump's reaching out to Democrats, acknowledged that this is an OK short term solution. House Speaker Paul Ryan told the press Thursday that while not ideal, it is "perfectly reasonable and rational."

On Twitter, the president urged Republicans "to start the Tax Reform/Tax Cut legislation ASAP."

"Hurry!"

It's false. The record is clear. McConnell supported Gorsuch from day one. Do your One Minute Hate every day if you like. The facts won't change.

You'd rather work with Schumer/Pelosi and the Dem leadership, the very people who just minutes before meeting Trump, were calling him a Nazi right?

Rather than just forging ahead and letting the base take out the RINOs.

Hey, I don't give a damn about the RINOs either. But those RINOs are still in control of committees and will get my justices confirmed. Reaching out to S/P accomplishes what?

"Well, maybe I can cut a deal. A beautiful deal. Just like my beautiful wall. On getting mainstream moderate centrist (puke) justices confirmed."

“but I can understand since he can at least trust the Democrats to be the opposition party.”

Not so much of opposition now, if you are making deals with them.

It remains to be seen whether Trump was yielding to the temptation of getting a little comeuppance, giving the GOP leadership the impression he might be a slightly crazy or the Democrat a lot of conservatives feared, wants the adoration of the Eastern press (as some #nevertrump conservatives have tweeted) or was doing something else altogether.

Superficially, it worries me, because like you, I see no upside to it. The worst possible interpetation is that he let his emotions get the better of him for the sake of hurting the GOPe. The best, which I'm inclined to wait and see about, is that this is a tactical move that I can't yet fathom. His tweets in re: DACA have NOT been encouraging.

There’s hardly any notable difference between the Democrat leadership and Republican leadership. They both are trying to stop our President.

I would NEVER work with cretins like Schumer and Pelosi

Wow I would never ever thought you would buck President Trump but I think you are 100% correct.

Making a good deal with the devil is still a deal with the devil. You have sold your soul and you better look out because they own you. Just wait for the Chucky Schumer smile and you know your done.

I would have liked to seen us in Texas fend for ourselves then for him to sell out the rest of the US. We can handle it, not sure about the rest of the US.

Tweet tweet tweedlely dee.

Now everyone go read between the lines and make up what I did not say.

The Guber Old Party needs to be rode out on a rail for sure and bitch slapped to the max. They have failed us over and over, time and time again. Why we don't have leadership in the House and Senate that can give We the People our agenda items that the President wants is beyond me and what is further beyond me why can't these lifers be REPLACED that CAN.

But making deals with Schumer and Pelosi, hello Amnesty for all of the invaders and hello welcome mat for millions more.

And that’s what we want, right? No one talking about spending at all. Let’s spend the dough, baby.

That is it, baby.....free taxpayer money for all. Continue raping the taxpayer. They gotta keep working to afford their microwave and gas for their SUV.

“I would have liked to seen us in Texas fend for ourselves then for him to sell out the rest of the US.”

That’s true. PDJT was between a rock and a hard place. If he didn’t do something to help the Texans he would’ve crucified by everyone else (not that he isn’t already). It would have been Bush and Katrina on steroids.

To do it he had to deal with the devil.

There’s no excuse for the GOP not supporting him.

I don’t know how this guy survives with crap being thrown at him 24/7.

I think we had a very good chance until this. They were seen as obstructionist to every President Trump agenda item and all supporters were pushing the ouster of these obstructionists.

But now, instead of having an uprising of the Conservative Right to rid these I believe the Conservative Right that would have fought for the ouster are set back on their heels by this latest "deal" by President Trump.

If something HUGE does not come of it, the Conservative Right support of President Trump may walk.

Trump is in between a rock and a hard place.

Yeah that is part of the job. Let me ask, How many "come to Jesus" meetings has President Trump had with Ryan and McConnell, one on one? How many every week, once a week or twice a week to get things in order. How many to ferment his MAGA deals? This is what great Presidents have done in the past, met with the lower house. No, he has been jetting around to rallies when he should be in DC busting heads and draining swamps. That is what we elected him to do

Moreover, since he is such a great deal maker, he should have been able to make a deal with them as QUICK as he made a deal with the devils, Schumer and Pelosi (spit, choke, vomit). Wouldn't you think?

No I smell a great big yuge rat.......

We know Trump has to have been thinking about how to get leverage with Ryan and McConnell. Clearly he understands that they are not his friends and is moving on to more of a hardball approach.

Let’s hope his approach works and doesn’t lead to more Democrat sellout policies (like urging Congress to legalize DACA).

McCain, Collins, and Murkowski thought they had hurt Trump. But they actually hurt their best buddy in the Senate, the publicly emasculated Senate “Majority” leader.

Recall that McCain was reported laughing at not being quite able to help Trump make America great. Now, an important ally has been marginalized.

Don’t see how the base is getting demoralized. Maybe outlier, sunny day supporters; base, no.

He lit the GOPe up and I, for one, am delighted. Wish I had someone to primary.

Maybe you’re right, and Trump is just inept. Yeah, that’s it, Chucky and Nancy played Trump.

Na, I stay with Trump. He’s been pretty much batting 1000 and nary a thing the knee jerkers go on about ever happen.

What a low opinion you must have of President Trump.
