That would make it the largest recorded quake since the 1960 Valdivia, Chile at 9.5

Hawaii may be far enough North. The curvature of Mexico may protect Mexico. Not true for Pacific Islands South of Quake.
Kratatoa, Indonesia was a monster quake (19th Century, I think). That TSUNAMI reached San Francisco, though small when it hit.
That place straddles the Indian and Pacific Oceans...

I’ve been in and by the Gulf of Tehuantepec 3 times in the 90’s on yacht deliveries. Was in Puerto Chiapas once for fuel. Area is known for Tehuantepeckers...dangerous offshore winds that can develop into tropical storms and then into hurricanes. I remember the port was full of fishing boats all tied to each other...and we had to tie to them. Kind of creepy place.

Yep, one on kamchatka peninsula back about three years ago.
Its kind of a hobby of mine since 1982 when I took a geology class in college.
The theory is the Indonesia quake was SO big that it actually shocked much of the Ring of Fire faults.
Over the decade since it, there have been patterns of large quakes which seem to rotate around the Ring of Fire counter clockwise.
If the pattern continues, Cascadia off OR/WA might be the next big one.
I hope NOT

I think you are right about Hawaii and Mexico being OK. And the only islands south of the quake are the Galapagos, which I don’t think have any people on them.
