Dangerous Category 5 Hurricane Irma had a devastating impact on islands in the Caribbean.
Hurricane and Storm surge watches were issued Thursday morning for South Florida. The Florida Keys began evacuating visitors and residents, followed by flood zones in Miami and Miami Beach. Sarasota FL declared a local state of emergency Thursday morning.
Polk County FL Sheriff Grady Judd said Wednesday that law enforcement authorities would check the identities of people who turn up at shelters--and take to jail anyone found to have an active arrest warrant. “If you go to a shelter for Irma and you have a warrant, we’ll gladly escort you to the safe and secure shelter called the Polk County Jail... “If you have a warrant, turn yourself in to the jail — it’s a secure shelter.” Judd also posted that sex offenders and sex predators would not be admitted to the shelters. "We cannot and we will not have innocent children in a shelter with sexual offenders & predators. Period." Judd's statements unleashed a liberal firestorm via Twitter.

This is a “heresy” answer, but my sister told me that their friends on Tierra Verdi are consider Zone A, and were having to evacuate. I just looked it up...looks like the whole area is A

As does the lift on that pitched roof that looks like an airplane wing.
Not good as the cone begins to shrink over SFL.
Seeing it as a Cat 2 that far out.....
a few things i have learned and developed over the years. No hurricanes here but we have had tornadoes and snow storms that brought down homes, barns, etc. lots of trees, light poles etc.
wood stove/coal stove is a must if possible.
large trash cans clean will hold alot of water off the roof.
stash up 10 of everything you buy and/or use on a regular basis, a little at a time.
first aid kit is kept well in a tool box.
insulin is ok for 30 days out the fridge, it will decrease in potency. if nothing else, dig a decent hole on the north side, put a small cooler in the ground and cover it. make sure there is way to access it. that will keep it cool as well.
its sort of a modified root cellar.
pack away some goodies, just for that situation.
out here we all have horses, livestock, pets. plan for them too. food, vet care, water.
i ordered a water filter years ago from monolithic marketplace. cost me $47 which included the spigot.
Had my own buckets. is as good as the top brands and cheaper.
if you have to make a filter of sorts: bucket with small hole and screen over that. put in sand..charcoal (not briquets)..gravel..rocks. in that order.
real charcoal is just burnt hardwoods. put this bucket over or on another or something to catch drip. this is a decent water filter.
if you got the gumption, look for a copy of “Where there is no doctor”..”where there is no dentist”..”where there is no mechanic”.
Very good books written by a Doc working in 3rd world countries.
olive oil will burn in a pinch. crisco works better. smell is not so good. keep lamp oil in bottles till needed. wont evaporate that way.

I don’t mean to be rude but, please, it was an eclipse. Nothing more. There are 2 to 5 eclipses every year.
The eclipse over the US this year had nothing to do with Irma.
Well people in the Tampa area are back in panic mode with the latest shift back to the west. Stores and gas stations packed again.
We we’re going to get trop. storm winds at most, now it looks like 100+ mph as it passes. Plus it’ll pull up the water table a few feet near the eye. The water table in my area is high. Only 18” below ground level. I’ve got 27 oak trees on my property and 2 large ones next to my house on the north side. Big concern is they’ll blow down into the house as it passes to the east when it puts a 100mph northerly on us.

Residents will likely have to have their emergency pass or DL to get on the island starting at 1000 tomorrow. They'll have to leave by Sunday morning before the bridge closes, or they ride it out.

Yes. Pinellas Zone A evacuation starts tomorrow at 6:00am. They need to get a sticker for their windshield or their current address on their license to get back in afterwards.

Your not rude. We do not get 2 to 5 compete solar eclipse’s a year over the US. Am Speculating, there is a lot of old beliefs that may give credence to that. You don’t have to hold them.

I forgot to add this about St. Pete and Zone A. My sister and her family ate at the Bob Evans on 34th Street. S, about 50th Ave. Their waiter was saying that they were not consider a Zone A...but the businesses across the street are. That would include the new Publix. I’ll believe that when I see it, but they do back up to the Marina, and the elevation on the west side of the road is much lower. But I looked close at the Evac map and it looks like they may have carved out one little area that’s not Zone A, so I imagine that’s them. Time will tell.
We’re less than 2 miles from the water, but the houses in our neighborhood are either in a Zone D or E, depending on which road you live on. For years the whole neighborhood was E, but this year they changed some streets to D. We’re boarding up but I sure liked the way the cone looked this afternoon before the 5 o’clock update :)
The local infrastructure is already overloaded. Trying to move the truly helpless is a mammoth job in the very least. In this scenario, its barely thinkable. So much sometimes is a “Thats all we can do, so we did it and we’ll see”.
one thing i did wonder though, as I have seen it in action before, is how did the shelters do with taking the pets?
I’ve seen it in action. One area was set up and actually sort of fenced in on the inside, as a potty for the animals. Everyone took turns to keep fighting down. This was put up hastily with a sort of slant floor and then rinsed right out the door during the storm.
