Hurricane Irma Live Thread Part II

Dangerous Category 5 Hurricane Irma had a devastating impact on islands in the Caribbean.

Hurricane and Storm surge watches were issued Thursday morning for South Florida. The Florida Keys began evacuating visitors and residents, followed by flood zones in Miami and Miami Beach. Sarasota FL declared a local state of emergency Thursday morning.

Polk County FL Sheriff Grady Judd said Wednesday that law enforcement authorities would check the identities of people who turn up at shelters--and take to jail anyone found to have an active arrest warrant. “If you go to a shelter for Irma and you have a warrant, we’ll gladly escort you to the safe and secure shelter called the Polk County Jail... “If you have a warrant, turn yourself in to the jail — it’s a secure shelter.” Judd also posted that sex offenders and sex predators would not be admitted to the shelters. "We cannot and we will not have innocent children in a shelter with sexual offenders & predators. Period." Judd's statements unleashed a liberal firestorm via Twitter.

Three of the four most expensive U.S. hurricanes on record dropped by two Saffir-Simpson categories before making landfall: Katrina came ashore as a Cat 3, Sandy was a post-tropical cyclone near minimal hurricane strength, and Ike was a Cat 2. Do not fixate on Irma’s Saffir-Simpson rating.

I love the plains. Wide open sky, from horizon to horizon. The ocean on a barrier island scares the heck out of me. I will stand outside and look for the tornado, but not the hurricane on the beach

More than you’d believe. But the couple I know went to friends and family inland from Tampa Bay by a good 15 miles. Said lots of south Floridians on the road with them. But, another friend flew up to Atlanta from Tarpon Springs. He’s really concerned- beautiful house on a little bay or canal.

She’s perking up now, eh?

I do miss seeing a lot of open sky, being surrounded by 100-150 ft fir trees.

“ew pressure drop is not a good thing, correct?
the lower the pressure the more intense the storm”

Right. The pressure dropping means the hurricane is trying to strengthen.

It looks very nice! I was born in Tallahassee but my family moved around the state a good bit until we settled into the family homestead in Gainesville in the early 70s. We used to go to Crescent Beach a lot when I was a teenager.

Even though I’ve been in the Midwest for 30 years, I still have to get a beach fix every year. I need to feel sand in between my toes, and go swimming in the ocean. There’s nothing else like that! I often tell my friends, you can take the girl out of Florida, but you can’t take Florida out of the girl!

Yep that is where I saw the couple with their backs to the Ocean taking a selfie of the Irma’s outer bands coming in and the waves crashing. They were smiling.

.....”I love the plains. Wide open sky, from horizon to horizon”....

Yep! One of my favorite places is out in the mid-west....went to a large picnic at one of the crop farmers there...wonderful and hard working people!....and no one cooks like they do!

Nice image. Hard data there. If it had run up the middle of peninsula it would have been 70 mph or higher winds eventually at every point on penninsula.
