Hurricane Irma Live Thread Part II

Dangerous Category 5 Hurricane Irma had a devastating impact on islands in the Caribbean.

Hurricane and Storm surge watches were issued Thursday morning for South Florida. The Florida Keys began evacuating visitors and residents, followed by flood zones in Miami and Miami Beach. Sarasota FL declared a local state of emergency Thursday morning.

Polk County FL Sheriff Grady Judd said Wednesday that law enforcement authorities would check the identities of people who turn up at shelters--and take to jail anyone found to have an active arrest warrant. “If you go to a shelter for Irma and you have a warrant, we’ll gladly escort you to the safe and secure shelter called the Polk County Jail... “If you have a warrant, turn yourself in to the jail — it’s a secure shelter.” Judd also posted that sex offenders and sex predators would not be admitted to the shelters. "We cannot and we will not have innocent children in a shelter with sexual offenders & predators. Period." Judd's statements unleashed a liberal firestorm via Twitter.

“So, what if some of the surely thousands extant pythons become airborne and flop in somebody’s “crib” or de-roofed house, or swimming the urban flooded streets. “

That’s brilliant! A new movie series is born. Pythonado!

The MS Gulf Coast causeway comes to mind— totally destroyed- concrete sections with rebar lifted and droped off supports, as well as the Lake Ponchartrain I-10 turnaround causeway. Water moves mountains.

Not a “bounce”. The eye is (or was) 35 miles wide. Let’s see if the center goes further inland drawn that way by pressure variance.

I don’t mind them being overly cautious. That is the wisest course in terms of a catastrophic event like a potential hurricane. So, I think it’s unfair to criticize the authorities if the catastrophe does not take place. The proper course of action is to get on your knees in thankfulness to God that a catastrophe did not destroy your life, your possessions, or your livelihood

My son-in-law has a diesel Ford pickup. He said while there were lines at gas stations, diesel pumps had no one waiting. For future reference.

Saw that in the Dallas area last week, during the post-Harvey fuel panic. I could drive for miles and see only diesel pumps active. The E85 pumps at the Kroger grocery stores were still active, too (though not all locations have fuel pumps).

I also saw people pumping E85 into older, pre-flex-fuel cars. I'm sure they felt very fortunate - for a while.

I am not qualified to answer that.

Ivan had a large surge as it went into the Florida panhandle but the surge didn’t impact those inland that much.

I do know Katrina’s surge went a good ways inland. A friend of mine owns a business in Gulfport, MS that is over 3 miles inland and he got 6’ of water in his building. In this case, much of the water came from the the back bays, rivers, etc. When the surge came in, it just pushed it up the rivers and other tributaries. Other factors would certainly include the terrain, sea level, etc.

Additionally, Katrina had a record 28’ surge. I really don’t believe we’ll see anything like that form this storm but then again, I am not an expert.

If it goes in further south of you, I don’t believe you have to be as concerned about surge. And hopefully this storm weakens quite a bit too.

They cannot predict landfall in 24 hours, but are certain your SUV caused all this.

When I was growing up, they would blame hurricanes on butterflies. One lonely butterfly would fly in circles and from that, the wind would get stronger and stronger and turn into a hurricane. Had that butterfly not flapped it wings at exactly the right time, the hurricane would not have happened. This "butterfly effect" is discussed seriously in chaos theory circles.

Yes, there will be pythons. I’m super ticked off at people who actually imported them into FL. They got loose in the glades after Hurricane Andrew and have become a huge problem since, devouring all the native species. I don’t want to run into one, but I don’t hate them. I hate the stupid people who caused this dangerous situation.

But then, there have always been alligators. Floridians are rather blasé about them.

Hurricane Ivan’s surge wiped out I-10 bridge going over Pensacola Bay. The earlier 185 mph winds from Irma were horrifying but people should never underestimate the surge.

There are some Youtube videos of the surge from Katrina that would show people that you don’t want to be in a surge area.

I’ll add to my previous post that I don’t believe a surge 3 miles inland is near as violent as it is right along the coast. Surge is certainly possible 3 miles inland but it’s usually not as violent. It’s mostly flooding that becomes the problem then.
