Dangerous Category 5 Hurricane Irma had a devastating impact on islands in the Caribbean.
Hurricane and Storm surge watches were issued Thursday morning for South Florida. The Florida Keys began evacuating visitors and residents, followed by flood zones in Miami and Miami Beach. Sarasota FL declared a local state of emergency Thursday morning.
Polk County FL Sheriff Grady Judd said Wednesday that law enforcement authorities would check the identities of people who turn up at shelters--and take to jail anyone found to have an active arrest warrant. If you go to a shelter for Irma and you have a warrant, well gladly escort you to the safe and secure shelter called the Polk County Jail... If you have a warrant, turn yourself in to the jail its a secure shelter. Judd also posted that sex offenders and sex predators would not be admitted to the shelters. "We cannot and we will not have innocent children in a shelter with sexual offenders & predators. Period." Judd's statements unleashed a liberal firestorm via Twitter.

I stayed at Cato Santa Maria in 2015. It’s connected to the mainland by a 48km causeway and the resort buildings are all vulnerable.
What’s almost ironic is who is going to know besides us if the planes go into Cuba’s airspace?
Well, I mean the whole world will know after the fact, but in the teeth of the hurricane, what’s Cuba going to do about it?
Cuba has anti aircraft missiles.

I showed up at 0645, was the only customer. Three young guys ran over--"what can we get for you?"
The coffin cooler and two smaller coolers are filled with blocks and bags of 120 lbs ice. LOVE the ice guys!
I’m sure they do what what are they going to be able to accomplish in the midst of a Cat 5 hurricane?
Ironic, isn’t it though? I have NO doubt they are depending on all our information and using for their best interests in the meantime.
Thanks NWS recon planes now get lost before we shoot you out of the sky.
Just shut off power to the cellphone towers...
That would cause a riot right then and there.
Highly doubtful.
Miami Mayor threatened to turn off power/water in high rises to “encourage” evac.
Godspeed to you as you seek safe haven.
it is rare to see block ice for sale in many areas. Up until the sixties it was standard delivery. Had an ice house next door to my office in the 70’s. It was run by an old Italian guy. After the owner and I arrived, the various office staff including a half dozen women would arrive. It was a rough neighborhood.
The ice house guy would stand out on the sidewalk with his hand in his jacket on a snub nosed revolver. Anyone bothering our staff would get a big growl.
Ah, civilization.
Good morning.
Thanks.
Good luck to you and your family.
The track of Irma doesn’t look good for us, but anything can happen.

This ice house is very old (est. 1902), and in a not-so-nice neighborhood. They make the ice in big blocks, then feed it into the ice chipper—looks just like a shiny wood chipper.
Guy on FOX13 just said the eye is 30 miles wide. A small track shift in any direction today will mean big differences around the area.
btw--very heavy LEO presence around town this morning.
Yeah for sure. I’m beginning to believe there was no way to know where to go in this storm it has been so unpredictable. Seems like 36 hours ago we thought the west coast was a safe bet,not now.
Nice to hear from Gov. Scott, great interview with Cantore on TWC. He realizes just how great a Governor we have! He’s the best!
FOX13 Wx guy says winds have decreased to 130mph...but this is before the FL Straits. Hey, we’ll take any good news we can get.
“btw—very heavy LEO presence around town this morning.”
I noticed that. Specially in the evac zones. Traffic and looter prevention is my guess.
