Hurricane Irma Live Thread
NHC/NOAA ^ | NHC/NOAA | NHC/NOAA

Posted on 09/04/2017 2:02:19 PM PDT by NautiNurse

While thoughts and prayers are with our Texas FRiends and neighbors, we are at the peak of the Atlantic Tropical Storm season. Hurricane Irma continues its trek from Cape Verde across the pond and toward the Hebert Box (see below). People with interests in the Southeastern U.S. and Gulf of Mexico should be alert to the forecast path updates for this powerful storm. It is important to note that the average NHC track errors are about 175 and 225 statute miles at days 4 and 5, respectively.

Hurricane Irma originally had a small wind field. In the past 24 hours, however, the wind field has expanded with hurriance force winds up to 40 miles from the center, and tropical storm force winds up to 140 miles from the storm center.

FL Governor Rick Scott reminds Floridians: Families should take time today to make sure you have a disaster plan and fully-stocked Disaster Supply Kit. Florida residents from West Palm Beach to Tampa Bay are heeding the alert. Store shelves are emptying of bottled water.

“... I just heard the weather channel say we could get a cat 4 and 5 in Florida ...”
-
Seriously?
You are in Delray Beach, Florida and are just now hearing about this?
I pray that you have preparations or an evacuation plan.

Do you have a link/URL where I can get the latest version of that "GOES Floater IR" image? (Grabbing the URL from your image just gives me that same image you posted, again...)

Since it's in an "uploads" directory, I suspect the GIFs are put together and uploaded on some sort of ad hoc schedule -- rather than being an automated, periodically incrementing loop like most of the GOES animations are...

Thanks!

Well, I think it was Opal that did manage to hold together enough do a considerable amount of damage up thru here but-as I recall, it was also considerable warmer then.

Yep. Sandy hits New Jersey. Gas shortage. A guy with tanker trucks and gasoline in Western PA could drive over and provide gas for a 30 percent premium. Instead, he stays home because of the anti-gouging laws.

Fawn,

You are just hearing about this? Really? Was that a mistype?

I have to say your tagline is incredibly ironic: My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. So true.

...1,300 -1,600 population of the tiny island of Barbuda....

90% devastation..declared uninhabitable following Hurricane Irma...homes, buildings, cars destroyed

60% homeless

Prime Minister. said people were in their houses for protection throughout the storm.

The tiny Island is quite a bit smaller than Washington DC, 1,600 people... They should probably abandon the entire island to it's neighbor Antigua......Hurricane Jose is forming and tracking like Irma...

“Does anyone have an idea of the Northbound traffic on 95, the turnpike or 75 out of S. FL?”

My aunt and uncle just told me it took them 15 hours to get from Ft. Myers to Charlotte today. They arrived at 10 pm.

Pretty big bottleneck at the merge of the Fla Tpk and I-75.

It's always like that. I can only imagine how bad it must be now.

Thanks for posting that! FWIW, after all the scary stuff, that one almost has a serene beauty to it!!

We are really blessed that technology gives us such diverse and elaborate planning and analysis tools...

(I'm old enough to remember when we only had hurricane info from ships, offshore islands, etc. -- reported by RADIO...)

True, but that will put it a considerable distance from here. I know that doesn’t help those in it’s path but I can’t do anything but pray for them.
There is a reason why I don’t live near a coast and this is it. Same thing with building on a floodplain-eventually a ‘big one’ IS going to come along and wipe you out. I’d prefer not to deal with any of it.

Florida is still going to get something out of this.

This storm is massive and it’s unlikely that it will miss FL altogether.

It’s more likely that it will not be a direct hit with the eye making landfall.

it took them 15 hours to get from Ft. Myers to Charlotte today.

I surely hope you mean Ft. Myers to Charlotte, NC. Charlotte Co. FL is next door (up I-75) to Ft. Myers/Lee County FL.

Fawn,

You need to get on top of this right away.

You live in Palm Beach County if you are in Delray Beach, Florida.

The website is here:
http://discover.pbcgov.org/Pages/default.aspx

Go there and really explore.

The site has a map listing evacuation code zones — like Zone E over by the Nature Reserve Lake where the lake can wash in Hurricane winds.

They also list shelters most of which are marked closed because they won’t open them for another 48 hours or so.

Get on top of this by talking to an experienced neighbor.

You are in the general path of the strongest hurricane to come out of the Atlantic this century. STOP EVERYTHING until you are fully prepared.
