It’s Italian, and (if one follows it down the chain) means either “Moorish” or “Yellow” depending on the path of origin.
Bit like “Smith” (and its equivalents — e.g., Schmidt) — which is, after, “Cohen” and its derivatives is the most common Jewish surname, just like for everyone.
In other words, who knows? Given that this guy is Reform, at most, I bet his mother is Jewish and father Catholic Italian, and both really atheists.
