100 Greatest Comedies of All Time
BBC ^

this year BBC Culture decided to get serious about comedy. We asked 253 film critics 118 women and 135 men from 52 countries and six continents a simple: What do you think are the 10 best comedies of all time? Films from any country made since cinema was invented were eligible, and BBC Culture did nothing to define in advance what a comedy is; we left that to each of the critics to decide. As always, we urged the experts to go with their heart and pick personal favourites, films that are part of their lives, not just the ones that meet some ideal of greatness.

"The only good Woody Allen movies are Take the Money and Run and Bananas."
I thought that "Play it again, Sam" was an enjoyable movie and also pretty funny.

For really funny, I love Court Jester (especially once they reach the castle) and Singin in the Rain - a genius movie in all respect sans maybe drama. "Some Like it Hot" was just stupid, not funny. "Court Jester" was around #98 on the AFI list, and that was also ridiculous. "Court Jester" should have been in the top 20, and perhaps even the top 10.

“What happened to ‘It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World’? One of my favorite comedies; or how about Animal House?”
Indeed. WAY funnier than some of the losers in the BBC list.
Also, the national lampoon “vacation” movies are some of the funniest ever made.

I hate Woody Allen. Boring. Never mind how ugly and liberal he is. I don't care for most Woody Allen movies I have seen. "Boring" is about right, though i've never seen "Annie Hall" and people tell me it's really good.
"Sleeper" is about the only one I thought was slightly funny.

Glad to see a few that many may consider obscure, but I think they are fantastic, seen them more than a few times:
Bunuel (Discreet Charm...)
and, The Music Box (a Laurel and Hardy)

Yes, My Cousin Vinnie, too. The only law movie worth watching. I very much liked "From the Hip."

Nice to see “Top Secret” made it on there. A ZAZ movie that wasn’t as popular as Airplane, but (IMHO) was just as funny.

“Pulp Fiction was a comedy?”
I know it’s a stretch, but you know the scene where Marvin gets his brains blown out in the back of the car? When I saw Pulp Fiction at the theater, everyone roared with laughter! Myself included.

What??? “Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House” isn’t on the list? They are nuts. At least “Mr. Hulot’s Holiday” is there.
