100 Greatest Comedies of All Time
BBC ^ | 08/22/2017

Posted on 08/31/2017 11:11:11 AM PDT by Phlap

this year BBC Culture decided to get serious about comedy. We asked 253 film critics – 118 women and 135 men – from 52 countries and six continents a simple: “What do you think are the 10 best comedies of all time?” Films from any country made since cinema was invented were eligible, and BBC Culture did nothing to define in advance what a comedy is; we left that to each of the critics to decide. As always, we urged the experts to go with their heart and pick personal favourites, films that are part of their lives, not just the ones that meet some ideal of greatness.

Clearly these comedy experts are trying to be “cultured” in their assessments.

Whatever makes you laugh is the best comedy.

One of the gauges of a classic movie with good writing is whether or not you can have lines just roll out of your mouth. Everyone has their favorite movie, but when the lines become part of the culture...that is a classic.

I decided some 15 years ago or so that SITR is my #1 movie, period. It has everything perfect, but perhaps no “drama”.

It’s short and sweet (1-1/2 hrs), to the point, hilarious, and wonderful in songs and dance.

There is physical humor but LOTS of quotable humor due to Lina Lamont, and at her expense. “What am I, dumb er sumthin?” (yes). That voice!

OK, I’ll stop trying to sell it. It’s usually rated #1 musical for good reason. It was not a broadway adaption, either. Some may find the “ballet” dull but I think it’s entertaining, and MUCH better (and shorter - again, key) than Kelly’s overrated “ballet” in his American in Paris the year prior.

Eddie Murphy was in top form in the ‘80s, but seemed to drop off due to his poor choices of films. Has he even done stand-up in 25 years ?

"Delirious" is still as funny today as it was back in 1983, and Eddie probably could never get away with half of that material today (especially stuff like, Gay Mr. T)

I don’t think they’ve run that on cable in years. I saw “Raw” in reruns several times, but it seems like it’s been 20 or more years since I saw it. I can’t even remember the last time I saw “Delirious.” But you’re right, the PC police and Gaystapo would go ape$hit with most of his material. Shows how fascist this country has gotten on pandering to sodomites as delicate little daisies.

How could I forget “Beetlejuice” ?

“I’ve seen the Exorcist about 167 times, and it keeps getting funnier, every single time I see it... “

I was impressed that movies like Blazing Saddles and Team America were in there. I figured the BBC was at the PC stage where movies like that would just get disappeared from history.

Exactly.

I can hear Michael Keaton delivering that line. That is gold.

The first fifteen minutes especially. The frat rush. ROTC

The Omegas pushing The Wimp and The Blimp over to the Deplorables Bunch was the funniest movie scene ever

I’ve never been in a movie house where the audience was bent over laughing. The theater was nuts. 1978. I think most us knew people like the characters and could relate

I hate Woody Allen. Boring. Never mind how ugly and liberal he is.

While I can't stand him, before his eccentricities became public, he made some really hilarious movies, especially his older movies: Everything you Ever Wanted to know about Sex, Sleeper, and then there's my personal favorite, Take the Money and Run.

It was really the Judge that made that movie.

That and Marissa Tomei. She deserved the Academy Award she received for that role.

Amazon Women on the Moon

Starring "Lots of Stars!"

It starts off with Arsenio Hall having a bad day, and it takes off from there. A great John Landis movie.

You can say that but then you probably believe the Loch Ness monster was Jack the Ripper, don’t you?

Hey, it was proven using undiscovered evidence!

However, there is one movie out there that I truly enjoy that I believe that I am the only person who ever watched it: Undercover Blues - 1993 - Kathleen Turner, Dennis Quaid, and Stanley Tucci.

Make that 2 of us! It's one of my favorite movies. Stanley Tucci was amazing in that movie. I think Chris Tucker borrowed his scream for "The Fifth Element," which is another terrific movie, but I don't think I'd classify it as a comedy, though it was full of humor.
