How Trump's immigration crackdown could slow flood-hit Houston's efforts to rebuild

In the coming weeks, as Houston turns its attention to rebuilding areas devastated by Tropical Storm Harvey, people like Jay De Leon are likely to play an outsized role – if they stay around.

De Leon, 47, owns a small construction business in Houston, and he and his 10 employees do exactly the kind of demolition and refurbishing the city will need. But like a large number of construction workers in Texas, De Leon and most of his workers live in the United States illegally, and that could make things complicated.

However, undocumented immigrants are growing increasingly nervous in Texas because of an immigration crackdown by the Trump administration that has cast a wide net.

De Leon, who has lived in the country for 20 years and has two citizen children, says the changes have spooked the city’s migrant workforce. In recent weeks, he said, one of his employees left the state and another returned to Mexico. Both feared that if they stayed they risked arrest.

Departing workers, he says, pose a problem for Houston in the wake of Harvey, which has killed at least 17 people and caused flood damage to commercial buildings, houses, roads and bridges expected to run into tens of billions of dollars.

“The situation that Houston is going through now with the hurricane is going to be the trial by fire for the Republicans and the governor that approved these radical laws,” De Leon said. “They will need our migrant labor to rebuild the city. I believe that without us it will be impossible.”

So there could be up to 11 arrests. Let’s get crackin’ ICE.

LOL! So nice of him to provide his name and whereabouts. ;)

[How does he pay his taxes for his illegal workers?]

Through a criminal enterprise of stolen / fake I.D.’s, stolen Social Security Numbers and fradulent paperwork and documents - any one of which could and SHOULD land him and several others in prison for years?

Looking forward to hearing his sob story when they come for him.

How many Americans have had their lives ruined by the Cheap Labor Express whores and the criminal activity of them and their friends?

However, undocumented immigrants are growing increasingly nervous in Texas because

All illegal "immigrants" are criminals.

But it’s not an opportunity for Americans to do it?

I want Houston to rebuild, but I want it done legally. If companies too corrupt to follow the law get left out, I’m okay with that.

Yeah, because no American can figure us how to hold a piece of drywall up against a wall and use a nail gun.

I watched old line company after company go out of business because The couldn’t compete with those hiring illegals. All that work used to be done by Americans and can be done again

There are PLENTY of people with those skills who are not illegal by their very presence here. Since there will be hundreds of billions of dollars of insurance claims paid, and lots of federal and state aid, that means that there’ll be plenty of money to pay US citizens...who will actually pay taxes on that money, and not send what’s left out of the country where it does our economy exactly zero good.

I’m not worried.

I have a problem with legal immigration. We have too much of it and we bring in the wrong people. We are importing poverty.

Not is De Leon abetting the use of illegal social security n0umbers but De Leon obviously, illegally obtained a federal employer ID number as well.

Isn’t that special. /sarc

“The situation that Houston is going through now with the hurricane is going to be the trial by fire for the Republicans and the governor that approved these radical laws,” De Leon said.”

So says the ILLEGAL “authority”.

I hope governor Abbott picks up this news story and has De Leon picked up.

Did Houston run out of able bodied gibs-me-dats? Did Houston run out of EBT mamas whose natural steatopygia is only amplified by sitting on it for years at a time?

At one time the King's Navy had press gangs who would scour the slums for able bodies to fill His Majesty's ships. Maybe in 2017 Houston needs a few press gangs.

I’m sure that the media will investigate him, just like they did with Joe the Plumber.

I call BS on this. There will still be plenty of illegals here to do the work.

Yep, and he’s been here twenty years. I don’t think he’s going to sit this one out, just in case he might “get caught”.

Yes! Thats what smart commercial orchards are doing...there should be H2 program that brings workers in, pays them, then sends them back.
