Hurricane Harvey made landfall near Rockport TX about 10:00PM CDT Friday night. Top sustained winds were 130mph. Rockport High School sustained heavy damage when a portion of the roof collapsed. A senior housing complex collapsed. The Rockport courthouse sustained major damage with a cargo trailer halfway in the building. Multiple tornadoes reported in the Houston/Galveston areas. There are reports of scattered structural fires and a shooting was reported in Corpus Christi. Residents along the San Bernard River were advised to evacuate and most TX Gulf coast counties are under flash flood watches.
Many locations are under a boil-water notice. Power outages are widespread. President Donald Trump promptly granted a Disaster Declaration to Texas Governor Greg Abbotts request. More than 700 members of the Texas Army and Air National Guards, Texas State Guard and the Texas Military Department have been activated and are positioning themselves throughout the state ahead of Hurricane Harvey and its anticipated landfall later this week. Ahead of the storm, FEMA sent supplies from its warehouse in Fort Worth to a staging point at Randolph Air Force Base near San Antonio.

Thread I: Potentially Catastrophic Hurricane Harvey Approaches Texas Gulf Coast
I volunteered in Homestead tent city after Hurricane Andrew. That storm was the great equalizer with people from wealthy to destitute blown out of their beds and homes in the middle of the night. Everyone arrived shoeless.
(psst: check your atlas for the location of the Caribbean vs. the Gulf of Mexico)
Nice story. Thank you for sharing it with me.
Be quiet and learn, Grasshopper. You are posting rehash. Get current.
Even if airports are closed, Marine One has a range of several hundred miles. If he says he’ll be there Tuesday, he will get there.
You mean you don’t watch this 24x7. How dare you get behind.
So glad, after all of these years, to see certain posters have not changed one friggin’ bit.
(that was sarcasm, in case it wasn’t discernible).
Three women just rescued from Myerland Apartments. One woman on crutches described the seeing snakes and frogs. Another said she thinks she saw an alligator. All three of them look so very relieved to be standing on solid ground.
Yup. Samaritans Purse is my charity from now on. Since red cross, Salvation army, American cancer, Susan Comen,Cleveland Clinic etc all cancel Pres Trumps Mara Lagos. Not one penny more to any of them.
Some folks are actually evacuating from Houston to Galveston. Now that's a twist.
Jeff Piotrosky measured a 150 mph gust, and, several 140’s at Rockport, as the leading eyewall passed over. Aransas Pass measured 136 sustained, by at least one report I’ve seen.
See post just above for Harvey wind speed reports
Please don't use this event to support the global warming baloney. Hurricanes have always been associated with torrential rains. The key here is that the storm has stalled and is continuing to dump rains when in most hurricane situations, the storm would have moved well inland and Houston would be seeing sunny skies today.
I remember Hurricane Agnes in 1972 which was also a slow-moving storm (in June!) that dumped torrential rains up most of the Eastern seaboard and was very destructive as a result.
Hurricanes have always had potential to be extremely destructive. In many cases, they stay out to sea or move in relatively unpopulated areas. As we continue to increase our population, we will have more destructive hurricanes in terms of property and lives lost. But it will have nothing to do with global warming.
Thanks. Been away for a bit, catching up now.

The before/after pics are astonishing. Thanks for the great find.
Spread the joy, eh?
My son who was in the Army for 16 years just said: “Well you could use a breaching charge or a SAW and just make a hole.” By SAW he meant an M-240.
Adapt and overcome....
