Hurricane Harvey Live Thread Part II
Various ^ | 8/26/2017 | Various

Posted on 08/26/2017 4:39:50 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Hurricane Harvey made landfall near Rockport TX about 10:00PM CDT Friday night. Top sustained winds were 130mph. Rockport High School sustained heavy damage when a portion of the roof collapsed. A senior housing complex collapsed. The Rockport courthouse sustained major damage with “a cargo trailer halfway in the building.” Multiple tornadoes reported in the Houston/Galveston areas. There are reports of scattered structural fires and a shooting was reported in Corpus Christi. Residents along the San Bernard River were advised to evacuate and most TX Gulf coast counties are under flash flood watches.

Many locations are under a boil-water notice. Power outages are widespread. President Donald Trump promptly granted a Disaster Declaration to Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s request. More than 700 members of the Texas Army and Air National Guards, Texas State Guard and the Texas Military Department have been activated and are positioning themselves throughout the state ahead of Hurricane Harvey and its anticipated landfall later this week. Ahead of the storm, FEMA sent supplies from its warehouse in Fort Worth to a staging point at Randolph Air Force Base near San Antonio.

“Staged” was not the most descriptive word for me to use and I couldn’t think of what would’ve been better. My point was I’m betting the major news outlets were and are omitting reporting on these incidents, so the interviews they do show seemed to be rather similar and unaffected somehow. Which could be also attributed to a state of emotional shock and survival in some of the cases. I’m certain the local news has more up-front coverage than what makes it onto national media. God bless everybody affected.

That’s one way of looking at it but I remember after Rita the place was
busy with all the workers, suppliers, etc coming in to clean up and rebuild.

Well... the rivers aren’t going up much- inches is what I’ve seen about the Brazos.
Be more accurate if I’d said their levels won’t be falling until Fri/Sat.

It really looks like it’s ‘over’ as far as new problems arising. They sure have enough.

its flooding the areas right next to the DAM spillways even more but once you get downstream the level is falling off,........ even with the extra flow because the heavy rain has stopped

Not misleading. I was pointing out the contradicting forecasts and uncertainty. It’s easy to monday morning quarterback the weather.

but the consensus of the models, not to mention common sense if one has a modicum of background in these systems, was big time rains,

Not even the local forecasters with all their common sense and knowledge of the area believed the 50 inch forecasts. Even believing there would be 30-50 in some parts of Houston, that would still not tell them where the actual flooding would occur.

There are obvious flood prone areas and I mentioned those earlier. Those could have been evacuated, but it's a small percentage of the area. The current evacuations, right now, Tuesday night, are in locations that were not ever supposed to flood. But many of them are not particularly dangerous either. The people are evacuating because they don't want to live in 3 feet of water in a single floor house or a house without power.

Yep, just saw that. Hearing stories of people getting robbed by people dressing up as security, declaring “mandatory evacuations” and all that. So curfew from 10 to 5am.

Nice catch on Barker, Saturday. Been wondering about that.

No longer sure how to measure or quantify the effects of the spillover(s). The Piney Point flow meter was my first choice, but it’s up against deep ocean bay, and nothing is really flowing, it’s just sitting and spreading out. Volume of thruput must be off the charts, but they aren’t measuring that, and probably can’t, now.

Harvey is expected to cross the Mississippi River as a tropical depression at Arkansas, into NW MS and up to TN, where it will be extratropical.

Clearly, yes. I just wasn’t making a critical connection. Buffalo Bayou is a major waterway, in full flood, but the 6 to 10 kcfs reported from the Piney Point station is nothing. Oroville spillway came, apart under 120 kcfs load, and that’s a cataract, but there just didn’t seem to be much more than a trickle flowing down Buffalo, by that puny number.

Lol...it all made sense as, soon as I visualized it. A small, nearly dry channel under normal conditions, with measuring gear suitably sized. Buried under a 50 foot deep, two mile wide flood that extends from the foot of the dams, out past Bolivar Peninsula, hardly moving at all. I doubt they are truly measuring even a sizable fraction of the total flow.
